james m
I am a Republican so I just finished reading this piece of proposed legislation before commenting on it. IMO: It's a step in the right direction but doesn't go far enough in support of private ownership of full auto firearms. I'd be interested in hearing what other forum members think of this. Robert Henley
doesn't go far enough in support of private ownership of full auto firearms. I'd be interested in hearing what other forum members think of this. I skimmed it, and it's a little difficult to figure out the changes although I'd tend to agree. What's the NRA's position on it? What really needs to happen is to eliminate the current restrictions on transfer of new machineguns to civilians. The current situation just creates an artificial supply shortage, which results in an artificially high price due to the limited supply. A good model of how it should be is the suppressor market. You can buy all the brand new suppressors you want at reasonable prices. The federal government gets a $200 tax on each one, so it's a money maker for the federal government. We could help the federal debt problem with this one simple change. The guns would still be regulated, but the artificial supply problem would be gone. I read where there is only one known instance of a registered MG being used illegally, and it was a police officer who was involved (murdered a drug dealer as I recall with a MAC). darrylta
I've wondered when this shoe would fall, sounds like the making of a last minute lame duck congress 2000 page assault on our gun rights. We need to pass it so we can find out whats in it??? The first sentence starts ominously,, To reform............I've heard that before. -Darryl
av8tr
It's been in comittee over a year. I doubt it will ever make it out.
james m
I think whether it makes it out of committee depends upon the result of this November's elections. Please get out an vote! Jim
The Lone Ranger
It is excellent legislation that has been around for several years in some form (at least since 2005 that I know of - so you can relax, darryl it was around before the annointed one from Chicago). Last congress it passed the house but was held by Roscoe Turner's hero (Feinstein) in the senate. The NRA has been supportive of it from day 1, but seems to have been much more vocal about it in recent months. IMO if November goes the way it looks with some fresh people coming in - minus corrupt incumbents from both parties that got whacked in the primaries, it might be a good time for it to see daylight. Some of the high points: ATF will be forced to fully support contractors training and/or providing security for the US gov which it does not currently do. Barrel ban: repair/replacement OK again. Definition of "manufacturing" - huge issue for the industry which adds cost and hassle for no gain in public safety due to government lawyers who insist bluing = building a firearm. Definition of "willful" in regard to licensee violations. Graduated penalties for FFL holders vs. the current revoke or nothing. RoscoeTurner
Last congress it passed the house but was held by Roscoe Turner's hero (Feinstein) in the senate. Now you should know my hero in the Senate is Boxer because of her love for the military.

Nothing like a fresh, hot cup of arrogance to start your day.
james m
I know it would be a real stretch but IMO California would be a much better State for ALL the legal residents without the likes of Boxer, Feinstein and Pelosi. There's probably more bad examples but those three witches immediately come to mind for an out-of-stater like me. BTW: Our own(Arizona) Firearms Freedom Law kicks in this October. It basically states that any firearm built in Arizona and not involved in interstate trade is exempt from all Federal firearms regulation. Unfortunately this does NOT include full auto firearms at this time. Jim Edited August 6, 2010 by james m
