  1. If he's selling it for 40k opening bid, I'd love to know what he paid for it. Very pretty gun. Oh and I agree on the camera work. A 40k gun, and a 40 dollar cell phone camera.
  2. I have to wonder if the Mauser model 712, if properly modified, could handle the Suomi 71 round drum. I think the model 712 was chambered in 7.65. I'm sure a competent gunsmith could make this functional, but in 9mm it might shake the thing apart.
  3. I thought that pre-May's would be priced at what they're worth, not at a price that's ludicrous and fishing. I'd think 14 to15k would be more in line. The buyers are limited, the gun's been refinished, and it isn't matching or all Colt. How is it worth that much more than an average shooter that's a pre-May?
  4. Kilroy,The Colt Navy is also a 28AC. Really confused now ? Jim C Confused State ---> "Where nothing makes sense and the keys to knowledge have been lost forever" I think I spent a few semesters there.
  5. I've flown the Aeronca Champ before. Most of my taildragger time was spent in the Decathalon and super Decathalon. Get the gun. They ain't going down in value.
  6. I've flown the Aeronca Champ before. Most of my taildragger time is in a Decathalon though.
  7. I want a '28 Navy but that price is way out of my budget. I personally think that auctions make people spend more than they normally would. James Julia seems to always command more money than these weapons would sell for on Gunbroker, Sturm, or subguns. I suppose more people are going to see the James Julia guns, thus elevating the price. Like the saying goes, only the rich will own Thompson's. At least the Colt variety.
  8. I have to wonder what mental midget thought it would be a good idea to drill holes in the wood to display it. Totally ruined the wood for a mount. A strap of some kind would have worked and not damaged the gun!
  9. There could be a couple people on this board that could pony up the funds for whatever it went for. I'm not one of them, but would love to see it in the hands of somebody here, not just a PD or the feds.
  10. I think we are seeing fluctuations in prices and sellers are fishing for what they can get. It doesn't mean that they will sell at that price. Make an offer! I just purchased a re-welded 1928 for 9k. Deals can be found. The one I'm buying needs work to look nice but for the price it's a bargain.
  11. I wrote this guy and asked if the lower was matching, if he had the original parts since these are not, if it was refinished, etc. No answer yet.
  12. We were talking about this particular gun on a different thread. The mag catch, selector, and safety switch are both WWII vintage. Who knows the lower may not be matching either.
  13. You are correct I didn't make that clear. You pull the pivot plate partially out, and remove the selector. They you can move the mag catch upwards and pull it out. I always remove the lower first from the receiver before I take anything else apart.
  14. That's a lot of money for anti-venon. I have at least 6 vials on hand at my clinic and I paid 400.00 apiece for them as I remember. Now I understand markup, but by my math, 56 vials of anti-venon would cost me 22,400 dollars. Seems to me they really over charge there. On the subject of Thompsons on Sub-guns.com, there is a 1928 overstamp there with 2 pictures and the guy wants 42,000 for it. One problem I can see from the limited photos is that the magazine release appears to be a WWII one, not a Colt. A lot of money for a gun that isn't all original. Also the seller is making claims that the gun will be worth 50 to 53 thousand in 3 years. That's a crystal ball theory if I ever heard one. I haven't taken a trigger group apart for quite a few years but if I remember correctly the entire group must be disassembled before the mag catch can be removed. So, since the whole thing was reduced to pieces , it possible it contains zero Colt parts. Jim C You can take the mag catch out by just removing the pivot plate and fire selector. You need not remove everything. I do agree with you though, who knows how many if any at all original Colt parts remain. We don't know if the lower matches or if it's even a Colt lower.
  15. The safety and select fire levers are WWII era as well. Maybe that is why it will be worth another 10 grand in 3 years? Good catch I didn't even notice that on first glance. Makes me wonder if the lower even matches.

  17. What Thompson's used the first pattern Cutts? From what I know, my gun has the 2nd pattern Cutts (serial number 8857). When did they change from the 1st to 2nd pattern? Also, the third pattern is threaded is it not?
  18. They sent me the catalog. Nice looking, but James Julia always seems to command ludicrous prices.
  19. Sarco recently had complete M1 bolts for sale for 125.00, but now they appear to be out of stock. This was as of less than 3 weeks ago. You might want to contact them and see if they can be backordered as they go in and out of stock on a lot of parts.
  20. I reload ammo in the thousands of rounds, tens of thousands of rounds. I've probably reloaded 15,000 or more rounds in 9mm, .223, and .45 auto this past year. I use plated or FMJ bullets on my sub-guns. Never have any trouble. Mostly Varget powder for rifle, and Alliant Power Pistol for all my sub-gun and handgun bullets. No problems, and I've fired a lot of it. The only jams I had in my Thompson was from commercial ammo. My Dillon 650XL press is a fast machine for all that I load too.
  21. Well I wasn't interested in the receiver, but I have run across parts from time to time that were nice, but not in this country. I'm leery of ordering things out of the country for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is it could be a scam or a set up.
  22. Can any parts be imported from overseas anymore?
  23. I'd never seen or even heard of a locking radio. That's way cool. What a literal blast from the past. One question, to the right and above the radio is a knob marked "spark". Is this something you could advance the timing with by pulling the knob? Curious if that's a magneto ignition.
  24. The 4 magazines on the window sill appear to be 20 round mags. I apologize for my ignorance, but in what year did they start manufacturing 30 round box magazines? I haven't been able to find that information so far.
