  1. I would tend to disagree on the reweld issue. There are a lot of very excellent machinists out there that can get dimensions down to the 0.0001" range and have the gun exact. I have a 1928A1 that's a reweld that was a dewat and mangled horribly. Now it's excellent. It may not take tens of thousands of rounds of ammo before a crack appears, but if the gun works, I don't see the issue.
  2. A bad barrel could also be the culprit. It the chamber is too deep in the receiver, you're not going to fire.
  3. I've dealt with him before. Honest and reliable for me.
  4. I actually think from the photos that it appears in better shape than mine.
  5. That's the sister gun to the one that I purchased back in 2012. The stenciled number on the receiver is 7013, mine is 7010. My Thompson is a 1921, not an overstamp though.
  6. As I recall the '68 GCA put an end to import of automatic weapons.
  7. Those are so great. I will have to take my Thompson out of the case again and look at it. Terrific pictures.
  8. It's my favorite SMG with the Max-31 upper to go shoot during competition days at Malabar gun range. I've stuck a Gemtech suppressor on the end and the gun is now very long, also very quiet, reliable, and doesn't climb. With the Suomi drum in place it's a really fun gun to shoot.
  9. I purchased an AOC M1 a couple years ago that was chromed, with some gold plated bling on it as well in various locations, plus it had a chromed '28 barrel on it. Probably the pictures are here on it somewhere. I paid 12.5k for the gun as it was, then had it redone back to the original M1 configuration, dark blue finish though (not parkerized). Love it now. Chrome plated guns look yuck to me.
  10. Great scene though, if ludicrous in scope. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x85tes_miller-s-crossing-le-roi-de-la-thom_travel Also did everyone notice how fast the 1st story of the house is totally engulfed in flames from a cigarette sparking a newspaper less than a minute ago?
  11. Jim C, both my parents are long since passed away (mom died while I was in veterinary school), but yes I know what you mean.
  12. I hope next year. Just purchased a Browning 1919A4. I figured it was time for a belt fed.
  13. Without provenance it's just an M1 Thompson. A FOIA search might help, but it might not too.
  14. Excellent choice. I own both an M1 and a 1928A1.
  15. I've had a couple of squibs in my MAC's, all I did was clear the barrel and keep on shooting. It can happen to anyone, and I agree being careful with your reloads helps a ton. I don't shoot my Colt Tommy but the M1 uses my reloads constantly.
  16. I've fired my Colt '21AC a total of 1 time. Actually had it recorded so I could prove that I did it. Not sure if or when I'll ever fire it again. I am tempted to but then again, all original, the ever present possibility of a squib, and the fact I have other Thompsons...
  17. I expect there to be slight fluctuation in prices of machine guns as long as there are no "executive orders" that make ownership more difficult or illegal. Thompson's are always going to be cool machine guns to own. With regards to another amnesty, given the current political climate, it ain't gonna happen. Even if it does sometime in the future, what will that do? Possibly bring out a scattered number of hidden unregistered machine guns that people have squirreled away in a wall, buried in a closet or hidden in an attic. Granted there are probably thousands of old unregistered machine guns out there but the number of them when you consider the population of the US is very small so I doubt it would have an effect on pricing. In fact those guns might go for even more money if they are in good shape. It's truly a sad situation in the overall market but unless the '86 machine gun ban is overturned, you won't see prices falling on automatic weapons, ever.
  18. I'm very happy you enjoyed it. My biggest problem is getting the time to get out there. I'll try again for the next shoot. I will let you know if I can get another doctor to sub for me. I know it's a lot of fun, I have a great time whenever I go. If I can get out next month I'll let you know and I'll bring the M1 Tommy. Maybe I'll even shoot my 1921 a little.
  19. This is very true. My 1921 was shipped by registered mail, and the supervisor at my hometown post office couldn't locate it. It took 2 weeks to deliver. Conversely, my M1 and 1928 Thompson were shipped via Priority mail and took 2 days to get to me. No problems with either system in my experience but the registered one is much safer although a hell of a lot slower. I actually had my post office call me on the 1921 and went and picked it up there when it arrived, it didn't bounce around in the jeep before its delivery to me.
  20. It took 2 weeks for my Colt Tommy to arrive shipped from Seattle Washington to St. Cloud Florida. It's agonizing. I use photobucket, just click on your picture, on the right side will be options for "share links". Click on the bottom one that says "IMG". Then go to your reply box, like where I'm typing right now. On the second line is a little box that will say "image" if you hold your mouse over it long enough. Click on that one. A box will come up that shows a box with the letters above it that say "URL". Put your mouse cursor in the box and hit "Ctrl V". Your url will appear in the box. Hit ok and you're done. It's easy.
  21. I'm assuming you mean at the breech end of the weapon. It depends how much you fire. I've went through 6 magazines in less than 2 minutes on my M1 and it was way too hot to touch that's for sure. The gun was smoking. The barrel would have definitely left you with burns.
  22. I can do that just for fun and see. I think my digital machine can crank up enough power to see things. I'll give it a shot and if successful will post here.
  23. I believe you are correct. I've been looking at this thing with my head loops on and it was only torched on the right side of the receiver, although the nose portion appears to have it the top as well. It's an ugly although functional repair. I'm taking it to my Class III repair guy on Thursday for him to look at. He does first rate work and may be able to work with the receiver as is. Deerslayer has a great point in not messing with the receiver in the way I was considering. Additionally, I think the Lone Ranger is correct, if I want to get a legal opinion I'm going to have to refer pictures to NFA and see what they say, in writing, before I proceed.
