How To Check The History Of Thompson Navy Overstamp Serial # 5925

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this information has been posted elsewhere on this forum but the question I have is what is the best and most

reliable way to check the transfer history of and Thompson Navy Overstamp that we have in our inventory.

Serial number is 5925 . Got a tip to try a Freedom of Information Act request but have not clue as to how to do that.

Any information provided would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Scott,

Welcome to the Forum. The information provided by mohawk64 above concerning NO 5295 is most likely all that is published on this Colt Thompson. The most comprehensive source of information on Colt Thompson's is in an expensive book by Gordon Herigstad titled, Colt Thompson Serial Numbers. The book is now in its 6th and final edition. I have an earlier edition of Gordon's book and it shows NO 5295 to be a Model 1921AC, originally purchased by the Brockton, MA police department. Much of the information in the book was reported to Gordon over the years so discrepancies regarding specific model types do exist. That said, it is an excellent source of information.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to ATF Disclosure Division will supply you the date NO 5295 was registered with the IRS and the number of transfers or owners since it left the police department. This information is usually free but it may take over a year to receive it from ATF. The names and locations of the prior owners will be redacted. You have the most important piece of information - the original purchaser.

If you would like to know more about NO 5295, post a few pictures. If still interested in filing a FOIA request, contact me via the Forum PM with your e-mail address.

Sounds like it was back to AOC twice. Once for the comp and again for the 28N work. FOI would likely tell you when the gun first entered the registry. Both mods might have occured before 34 though and wouldn't be there. Also, FOIs are taking longer than F4 transfers. Reaching out to the Brockton PD might be an option.
