StrangeRanger
I am awaiting transfer of a Lanchester which has the these markings on the stock I found another stock on milsurps.com with virtually identical markings A friend of a friend who is Saudi was able to translate the left side markings as "for education" but she could not make sense of the right side. I'm guessing that in this case education may mean training and based on the existence of two examples I'm pretty certain this is some kind of official marking like a unit designation or a rack number but that's only a guess. Can anyone help out?

StrangeRanger
Thanks for that. It confirms the "for education" translation but I've got to wonder what sort of school has SMGs. Maybe a military or police academy? Now I really want to know what the right side says Edited April 20, 2021 by StrangeRanger
dalbert
One of my Arabic speaking employees confirmed it means for education, or for training. That is the meaning of the left side of the stock. He could not translate the other side. David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com
StrangeRanger
Thank you. My Saudi-born source had the same issue. I have read that there are differences between the characters used in various Arabic dialects but it seems strange that neither of our sources could decipher the right side. As a Hail Mary I sent a request with copy of the pix to the Modern Languages Dept. at the local University where they have an Arabic program. I'm not holding my breath. StrangeRanger
Been think about this. With two inabilities to translate it may not be a word at all. It may be a symbol such as part of a unit crest or the like which would only be meaningful to members of the unit and meaningless to outsiders. I tried to make myself see a scimitar in it because that would be an entirely appropriate symbol for an Arabic unit but I just couldn't find one. Whatever it is it's non-obvious.
