dalbert
I like slings, and ended up buying a mixed lot of them recently from Simpson Ltd., but I'm not sure what they are. I bought the lot because of the one that is embroidered "XM 177E2," thinking it might be something special, but I think it may just be a sling that someone marked themself. Anyway, I think most, if not all the other slings are ComBloc, but I'm not sure exactly what they are for. If you know what any of them are, I'd appreciate your help. Thanks in advance! Oldtrooper
It doesn't look like standard US government stenciling. All of the XM's I saw in service were equipped with standard OD canvas or nylon Garand slings, or with canvas utility straps attached by para-cord ... And some with no slings at all. But then again, I don't know everything Edited July 3, 2022 by Oldtrooper
StrangeRanger
6 and 7 look a lot like typical SKS slings, as issued by several ComBloc militaries. I've seen those end fixtures on 4 and 5 before but I cannot remember exactly where but I'm pretty sure it was ComBloc as well
dalbert
Thanks for your help so far. I was able to confirm the identity of a few of them, as follows: 1. XM177 E2 marked sling - Still wondering about any specifics regarding this sling2. Unknown - Similar to attachment to AK slings, but this one is made of pigskin3. This might be an SKS sling with the orphan leather attachment shown to the left of the slings4. Unknown5. Unknown, same as above6. Chinese style SKS sling7. Chinese style SKS sling8. dalbert
Thanks to your help, I think the pigskin sling is the only one remaining to be identified. I think it may be an AK sling of some sort, but I could be wrong. I don't know if I'll ever know the origin of the XM177 E2 marked sling. 1. StrangeRanger
FWIW I used to own a Yugoslavian M59/66 (SKS) which came NIB with a sling like 6 and 7 so their provenance might or might not be Chinese
Mike Hammer
David that particular XM sling was discussed on a thread a couple of years ago, at least I think the discussion was on this board. So there must be more of these around unless the one you bought is the very same one that was shown by someone else.

Mike Hammer
David, looks like we previously covered this ground a while back....http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=25938&hl=xm177 Edited July 6, 2022 by Mike Hammer
RoscoeTurner
I never saw a sling marked like that during my time in the Army, 79-06. The CAR15s we used in El Salvador, very similar to the XM177, were issued with slings but they were the standard M16 type sling common at the time (1989). Some of the CIA guys we supported had XM177s but they too if they had a sling were the standard issue type.
