TennesseeTimmy
As I understand things, you CAN take it across state lines if you go thru the right hoops. But kinda like you say, ME telling you that doesn’t mean much. Officially, your source is the ATF - there are docs and FAQs on their website. Or, go back to the “main” thompson page on this site, drop down a half dozen forums, and post your questions in the class III forum. Those guys have the knowledge. Good luck, Timmy. RoscoeTurner
If you cannot find the answers you are looking for online do not make the mistake of calling your local ATF office, generally they will not have the information you are looking for. You will need to contact NFA Branch in WV for answers to your questions.https://www.atf.gov/firearms/national-firearms-act-division

As for paperwork, you do not have to carry the stamp with you. Just make a copy of the Form 4 and keep it with the firearm, and keep the original in a safe. Technially you don't have to show that form to law enforcement, but honestly it would make things easier to show them if they did ask for it. Now if it was the ATF, then you must provide the paperwork for them. Sorry I don't have the source for this information. It might be in the NFA handbook, which I really am not going to read right now.. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/national-firearms-act-handbook
b_san
An SBR is only an SBR while configured as an SBR. Did it start out as a pistol? Then it could be returned to that configuration and cross state lines as a pistol w/o paperwork required. If it started out as a rifle, you can remove the short barreled upper and put a <16" upper on it to return it to non-SBR status and it can also cross state lines w/o paperwork (alternatively as a receiver w/o a barreled upper it's also not an SBR but also not useful as a firearm). If it's still configured as an SBR you must file a 5320.20 which can be requested for up to 1 year period and must be filed for each state you wish to visit (best practice, pick a date each year and file one for each state you might possibly visit). Suppressors do not require a 5320.20 and can cross state lines, additionally so can C&R NFA firearms if owned by a current C&R FFL holder. Even prior to having an FFL/SOT I never carried any paperwork with my NFAs, if you're paranoid take a pic of your Forms and keep them in a folder on your phone. Nosy range officers can GFY if they try to demand your paperwork.
jojeep
A friend of mine would make Color Photo Copies of the paperwork with Tax Stamp and put in a Plastic Cigar Tube in the Butt Stock. You don't want to travel with the Original Tax Stamp unless you have to.
