colt21a
i spoke with a d.c. insider today.she tell's me that in some memo there is a tax transfer increase for 2009 from $200.00 to $1,000.00. and a possible freeze on transfer's in the work's due to workload, yeah right!!! if anybody with a handle on it let me know.because if that is the case i'm selling off what i've got left.i told her to mail me or fax me this copy.{ and she said it would be her job} since this is in the planning stage. and internal memo for some dept's on a need to know basis. i said b.s.> now i heard years ago it could go to $500.00 like the class three stamp s.o.t. did. but not any other form's. do you think this is a scare story?. i'm posting this here. to get info, and not all over the gosh darn internet.as i'm sure if the license fee's go to $1,000.00 also.alot of class three's will hang it up. as we lost a big bunch when it went to $500.00.. and thats no b.s. i've seen it. it's good to have solid info and be prepared. at least one Thompson is frozen in time. regards Ron p.s. i will pose this question to them at s.a.r.show in dec. TSMGguy
Not without an act of Congress. The BATF has no authority to raise the rate in an arbitrary manner. That's why it has not changed in all of these years. The current $200 tax stamp fee was set by Congessional act in 1934, and was meant to be so expensive as to discourage transfers, and so ownership of Class III weaponry in general. No one could fortell almost 75 years of inflation at that time. In the midst of the Great Depression, $200 was not an inconsiderable amount. Now, it's chicken feed. The Lone Ranger
FWIW, 26 U.S.C. 5811(a) would need to be changed - so yes, an act of congress but what is that any more? Slip one paragraph into an 8000 page spending bill that doesn't get read by anyone who votes on it and ... presto. Next thing you know, you're getting a low-interest loan from a federally regulated bank and don't even know it! Unfortunately, I don't know if such a bill exists. There is always "something" lurking... ban this, tax that @ 500%. Just too many for my failing brain to keep up with.

October1971
If the country let's Obama steal the election ( voter fraud in 13 states, 200,000 million $ from anonymous donors, 100% pro-obama media) and the Congress becomes a super-majority, they can ( and will ) pass every conceivable anti-gun they can think of. If you know ANYONE in your circle of friends and family who are leaning towards this Socialist/radical, I urge you to counsel them. McCain is nothing to brag about, but compared to Obama....it's like night and day! It's a very dark time in the USA that we face.
Paul in PA
I think you all may be talking about the five fold increase being discussed in the NRA publications. In the most recent issue of the NRA monthly magazines there is a rumor that the excise tax on new firearms and ammunition if going up if Obama is elected. Again, anything is possible under a new administration, no the existing one for that matter. Does not matter who get's elected in November, there will be changes! The question is how radical. October1971
I will predict that if Obama gets in and there is a super majority, fillibuster proof Congress, you will see them do the following: 1 Permanent AW ban 2 High capacity mag ban 3. Gun show sales will have to go thru licensed dealers, even private sales 4. Possible BATF Licensing of show promoters to enforce #3 above 5. Ammunition regulation (dust off the old "Arsenal License" of two decades ago, limiting ammo and reloadiing components) 6. Anything else they've ever tried in decades past..... 7. All of the above. Consider the following, however: In addition to active gun control measures, Up to (5) Supreme Ct justices may be retiring/dying in the next 4-5 years (who would you rather have in the Whitehouse appointing replacements? (Can you envision a "renewed look at the 2nd amendment...?" What's worse is: Most legal cases ( of all kinds ) never make it to the supreme court They are settled in lower courts and appeal courts and there will be literally hundreds of judges to appoint all over the country by the next administration. And it's the lower level courts that gradually shape "interpretive legislation" which shifts things to either conservative or liberal. This situation and the appt of Supreme Ct. justices is scarier than even the gun control measures they might throw at us. I'm not trying to be gloom and doom, but if the Republicans threw us to the wolves on core conservative issues, think what the far left liberals will try to do, with impunity. If Obama gets in and they issue drivers licenses or "I D" cards to 12 million illegals, and that allows them to vote in future elections, this country will never be turned back around to conservative core values again, short of some kind of anarchy... I ignore the polls leading up to an election, but when you see how Obama's well oiled machine is working, I'm afraid this will be a landslide election. He is having his illegal operatives register voters on college campuses and elsewhere, transporting them to early voting precincts at the same time, and the people are being told who to vote for. And this is going on by the hundreds of thousands all over this country. Unless the U. S. Justice Dept can implement immediate action to overturn the illegal voting, this election is rigged from the get go and McCain doesn't stand a chance. I hope on November 5th that we all breath a sigh of relief and say "boy weren't we overly pessimistic and aren't we glad McCain pulled it off." But deep down, I'm very concerned that this will not be the case. If the worst happens, and we can't replace the majority of the liberals in Congress come next election, we will have no hope for ever regaining anything even close to the conservative govt. that our forefathers worked so hard to have.
