Had a few great phone conversations with him. You know someone knows there stuff when they can walk you through a drum issue over the phone and get it up and running without even seeing it in person. He will be missed.
I paid around $600 for the last one I purchased which I thought was about right. That was a couple three years ago and I have seen some that were outrageously priced. At least you of all people know a real one when you see it.
Slightly off the topic but that is a good looking Thompson. I see so many on posters and in drawings that are just rough outlines of the Thompson. This one looks like the sculptor had a Thompson in front of him to go by while he was working.
Wow, good photo! I was ready to argue that it was a P with a punch or a circle obscuring it looking at the first post. But looking at these photos it sure looks like an R.
Nice job but I agree with TD I have done a lot of research on that little S and have never seen one that size in that font. Presenting it in the wax paper is a nice touch though.
Looks great Dan. I have two Savage vertical grips that you repaired and they are holding up great. I have never seen an original Savage or Colt that was laminated so I'm going with your "60 year old fix" just amazed the glue held up as well as it did. Something new every day!
Sorry to hear this! Doug has helped me many times and has been a major part of my Thompson education. I know he has had many challenges of late. Hope and prayers to both Doug and Madeline.
The "S" is too large. I scaled the pic next to several known originals and in every case the "S" stamps on the originals were consistently the same size and smaller than the grip on ebay. I also agree with others that the finish is too perfect for a piece of wood that old.
