I was also able to speak with Merle after Stampcollector , very cordial conversation although I believe he is having some issues, he stated he had not been downstairs in a while but he would try to send them back after the weekend after some company left. I reminded him that I sent him the prepaid mail box just to put them in and leave for postman! Nothing Yet as of this posting!

Thanks also for the Info. on Merle, I also agree with Stampcollector and definitely wish him well, and also will be mindful of his condition. I have enjoyed my conversations with him in the past and he has always been a great guy to deal with and who has been very helpful to me and with many other people on this board who depend on him, especially with Thompson related issues. I also had heard he was ill for a while and also lost his wife that is why I did not want to bother him because he is such a good guy! Approximately 2 and a half-3 yrs ago I sent Merle a Worchester era Drum and a Blank 20 round magazine for repairs. After multiple phone calls to have him send them back whether finished or not he refuses to return calls. I have sent on 2 different occasions a pre-paid box for him to return items with no response. TD, The reason I stated that it was a mistake that they were traded in on newer weapons like they still do to this day in our department without any regard to the History value of the Guns and Cleveland role in the History especially the Early 3 Digit Colts to Our Historical Society and Museum. Each of the six Districts had one or two along with some being assigned to various detective Bureau and special units. The Department has only one confiscated Colt and one 28 Thompson remaining.neither one is in good condition. The bosses at the time could have cared less about the value of the guns or preserving the history of same and their relationship to our department . Ps. I am not against trading in weapons to a commercial dealer for better weapons but I do believe that our Historical society and Museum should of had a say as to which Thompsons were traded and which ones were saved. Thats why I would like to obtain one of the Thompson that were traded if one becomes available. jimmy

CPD had a 6th District up until 8-10 years ago. The way your Butt stock was marked was how we marked our weapons our shotguns also same way. The Circle with the CPD was how we stamped all our CPD guns,even guns that were confiscated that were used for say undercover work were also stamped with the circle CPD . Most of our Tommy Guns were traded in the late eighties or early nineties for newer weapons,what a mistake !( because some of them were early Colt Thompsons and I do mean early!!!) . I volunteer at the Cleveland Police Museum and will try ,if you like to research it , because we still have quite a few of those records. Hope this Helps. Ps. Jim C351 , Before turning the books over to anyone, I would request that they give you a copy of a Police report from whatever Police agency is Investigating the Theft. ,also I would consult the Investigating Officer from that Police agency and ask him how he would like to handle the books to be turned over to whom and when and how!! They might have you give them to your Local PD to enter into evidence so that they can retreive them to keep the chain of evidence intact if they are really trying to solve this!! Ps whatever you do get a Receipt. Jimmy
