nhetzer
Hey all I'm new to Thompsons and without going into great detail I just have a quick question. How can I tell if my compensator is press fit or threaded on?
Sandman1957
To my knowledge none of the Compensators are press fitted, just the Ring sight, ie a barrel without a compensator. Most of the "press fitted" sight have cross pins. Welcome to the forum.
Paladin601
Some of the semi auto are press fit. If that is what you mean. Full auto, like Sandman said
GUTTERRATT
The only press fit comps I am aware of are on semi auto Kahr guns
nhetzer
So this may be a stupid question also but if it is a Khar gun, would that be indicated on gun? My gun is the parkerized "Commando" version that had the black furniture on it. It says Auto Ordinace Worcester Mass. The sight blade is part of the compensator, no ring sight. So this is threaded? I am going through the paperwork to get my 10.5 inch barrel and would like to reuse my own compensator. If I don't have to buy another one that would be great. I've just heard both ways and want to make sure I don't screw it up trying to get it off of the gun.
Motorcar
My gun is the parkerized "Commando" version that had the black furniture on it. It says Auto Ordinace Worcester Mass. There is a semi auto forum here that would reduce confusion if you post in that arena. Your Kahr produced rifle has a pressed on compensator, only full auto Thompsons have true "Cutts" compensators which are threaded on. (including Colt produced 1921/1927 semi auto only conversions.) nhetzer
Thank you for the clarification. I will leave the compensator that is on the barrel alone and get a correct one for the new barrel. Thanks again!
GUTTERRATT
If I am not mistaken WH semis have threaded comps as well. Edited September 25, 2015 by GUTTERRATT
Motorcar
You may be correct on the WH, I don't remember when the change occurred...since his is a Kahr it's pressed.
Bender
Yes, I have a WH semi made in 1990 with a threaded cutts. I was actually looking for info on how to remove one of these....anyone have any advice?
Chief762
Bender,If the compensator on your gun is like the one on my WH 28, it will unscrew counter-clockwise. It's probably been installed with Loc-Tite or something similar since they didn't pin them. Use a little heat to loosen up the Loc-Tite and your comp will turn off. Good luck.Chief762 Edited September 26, 2015 by Chief762
Bender
Thanks chief!Did you use a strap wrench? What kind of torque are these comps installed with?
shadycon
In 2007 when I rebuilt my SA [ it was a basket case] I got a replacement barrel [16"] from Auto Ord. and it was threaded. Comp and site just screwed on by hand , so I used locktite. No way to pin it. To this day it has not moved. Worked for me! GUTTERRATT
I believe what PK uses on his compensators is Loctite 290.
