reconbob
I found this photo in Doug's stuff. It was sent to Doug by TomNelson - the author of The Worlds Submachine Guns in the late1990's. Tom Nelsons note with the photo says "Doug - have you seenthis plate - Taken about 45+ years ago at West Point. The manis Jack Krcma who died two months ago - FYI - All the best, Tom." As you can see he is posing with the West Point M1923 withno bipod (curator says it never had one but that is a different story)and a 100 rd. drum. I never heard of this guy but it turns out he was a noted firearmsand forensics expert. If you go here: http://www.smallarmsreview.com/display.article.cfm?idarticles=1092 There is a biography and also a couple more photos of Thompsons - one of him firing a Thompson into a water tankin a ballistics lab So much to learn... Taliaferro
The muzzle nut goes on under or inside of the ring that holds the bipod in place. When screwed down thelarge flange on nut allows the bipod to swing freely from left to right. Tracie Hill

Those two bipod grooves on the front forearm seem like one was made by mistake, just a miscalculation of the length of the bipod. 🤔
