ac556k
I saw a Bridgeport amnesty registered 1928 with a horizontal front grip and smooth barrel with no comp. Could this be correct for any 1928? Here is link... http://www.impactguns.com/store/MGT-S-499168.html
JimFromFL
Correct in what way? As they tried to find ways to speed up the process and make it cheaper, it was discovered that the fins were not necessary. As a result, the fin-less barrels were produced. Remember, the fin and non-finned barrels are identical with the exception of the fins. As finned barrels wore out and needed replacement, the only barrels available were smooth. The same thing happened with the rear sight. So, what happens as barrels and rear sights broke or wore out, they were replace with the current model which were the smooth and stamped rear sight. For the most part, I would venture to say that most 28s had the lyman sights and finned barrels but near the end of production some hybrids could have been produced were the smooth barrel and stamped sight were originally there. (Franks book may have more info on this.) Back you the item in the picture.... Since this particular Thompson has the Lyman rear sights and paddle type selector and safety switches, I would venture to guess the original barrel was shot-out and simply replaced with the other type barrel. ODS9091
But looking at the picture, that appears to be an M1 barrel. Which fits and will work, but is not "correct" for a '28.
sevengunner
That thing is one oddball mamma. Smooth barrels existed on wartime 1928s, but were fitted with comps. Bad news: ODS9091 called it right. The barrel installed is for an M1. Good news: You could remove a barrel (finned or not) with comp assy off one of those war-time 1928 parts kits from R-Guns, etc. and restore the gun to a mainstream configuration correct for the 1928. Hawkeye_Joe
I noticed that every 1928A1 on that site had the comp's missing... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif Even the chrome plated one..... ac556k
What would be a fair price for this gun? $18k?
Lancer
QUOTE (ac556k @ Jul 21 2006, 12:27 PM) What would be a fair price for this gun? $18k? If this gun can be had for 18k, it most likely will go pretty quick. Looks like a nice piece that only needs a finned barrel and comp.
OldFalGuy
Nice catch Hawkeye- Sumthins wrong with this Lucy- and the nickle one had a smooth barrel also. When did they make them nickle or is that way after market- doesn't appeal to me at all. Mark
