John in IN
I've read different things about these and how they weren't distributed commercially or through police departments, etc.How did most of them become transferable? I thought you guys might know the story of your own M3/M3A1 or have gone the FOIA route, or just know in general. They certainly aren't common like M16's and some others. Were they mostly troop bring-backs or what? Thanks for any info/opinions. John
jim c 351
John,Can't comment about the M3A1, but the M3's were given the UK. The UK then sold them back to arms dealers in the 50's, who in turn welded them into DAWAT's and sold for $50.00 ea in gun magazines. My M3 and BAR were both British proofed.Jim C

TSMGguy
I've been looking for a really nice GI M3A1 for years. They're somewhat rare. Anyone want to trade one for a really nice MP-40?
Black River Militaria CII
M3s are far more rare than A1s in the NFRTR. A1 just went in the RIA auction. fully transferable Ithacas are the most scarce as transferables. Many were imported and DEWATed during the active DEWAT retail years in middle 1950s. These SMGs are still in active service in reserves and possibly elsewhere. GM examples are not hard to find for sale but often priced over market. Then there are the Medea repro Greaseguns which are usually overpriced. At least most of these have now been worked up to be reliable and cosmetically attractive. Generally they were poorly constructed and cosmetically crude.FWIW
John in IN
Is it true that if the gun has been rewated and transferable, it will NOT show Guide Lamp as the manufacturer on the F4 (provided it is a GL gun of course) but instead will show the rewater as the manufacturer? Thanks, John
jim c 351
John,I think there may be a difference between REWATing and REMANUFACTUREing. REWATING list the original manufacturer. REMANUFACTUREING will show the person doing the remanufacturing as the maker.Jim C Edited October 25, 2018 by jim c
DZelenka
Mine was purchased by a New Orleans Police Department officer from International Armament Corporation on March 24, 1964. Because he used department letterhead, it transferred to him on a Form 5. I have copies of the receipt and the form. It was a live gun. I bought it from his estate. It was a former British Lend Lease gun and still has the magazine release guard modification and black paint. Bob is currently refinishing it. (How's it coming, Bob?) Frank Iannamico
My transferable Guide Lamp M3A1 came from a PD in Oregon. They said it came from some gov't program. I paid $1700.00 for it in 1993.My MP40 came from a Texas PD, it was seized from a bank robber, the Dept registered it in 1967.

TM76
Mine M3 GL grease gun was a British lend lease gun painted black , but I was lucky they did not weld that guard over the Magazine release button , I know that weld sometimes messes up the lettering above & below the weld . The grease gun went to a arms dealer , then the Birmingham ,AL. police department bought a whole bunch of them & transferred to two people before I bought it from a fellow in Virginia ., so I was the third person to get it. Shoots perfect & looks great .
