J.F. Bell
Anyone ever find this type of barrel mount? Or better yet, have a picture? Admittedly it comes from an illustration rather than a proper photograph. That said, it's an interesting detail and seems unlikely that an artist would include it on his own. From the limited detail I'm guessing this was field expedient. http://img905.imageshack.us/img905/6371/ZJtOFe.jpg
jpw43
Probably just something the artist dreamed up.
shadycon
I have an older Doug Richardson catalog and he had them listed. I don't think that they were originally on a factory gun.

giantpanda4
Doug still sells barrels that have the groove in them for this swivel. See his website.
Big Al
They were featured in the film Bataan. They look to be custom fabricated using the lower sling loop from a Trapdoor Springfield attached to a simple piece of sheet steel, bent to shape, with a nut and bolt. reconbob
Artists are not gun experts. I have posted once or twice before the book coverOf Doc Savage wielding a Thompson....and the artist obviously used a MattelTommy-Burst for reference as he took the trouble to include the little door forloading the roll caps in the front of the magazine. For those of you who are not old enough the Mattel Tommy-Burst was a realisticplastic M1928A1 cap gun with a spring loaded cocking handle which ratchetedforward operating a mechanism which fed and fired roll caps which passed over alittle wheel and were struck by a hammer. It was a great toy and even without thecaps made a satisfying buzzing sound which one could imagine was a burst of fullauto fire. This toy was popular during the days of the Combat TV show and went thruseveral modifications to modernize it as the Vietnam War became front and center. There was a camo green jungle model for example. Then the anti-gun Americasucks hysteria took over and it has never, and will never be the same. Bob
TD.
Prior to the Lend Lease Act in 1941 the majority of Thompson guns seen by the public in pictures most likely were equipped with the vertical fore grip. This was true at the beginning of World War II as the British cash and carry Thompsons were mostly equipped with the vertical fore grip. The Brits attached an offset Enfield sling swivel on the vertical fore grip with two screws so a sling could be utilized. The Chinese manufactured their own Thompson gun and solved the problem of no forward sling swivel just like the artist in the above poster. I would assume the artist looked at a series of then published pictures of the Thompson gun before putting paint to canvas. Here is the Chinese forward sling swivel.
