A good friend of mine called the other night after the election and asked if I wanted to go in on buying some land and moving to Canada. I told him that it was not gonna be any better up there and they would take our guns as soon as we arrived.....not later as might happen with the new Prez-elect.

I know it sounds kinda Streisand/Balwinish to say "if my candidate doesn't win I'll leave the USA" but ...

How is New Zealand????.....Murray, what is the immigration policy there with regards to NFA and other weapons????

Joe: New Zealand is a beautiful little country peopled by friendly sorts. Unfortunately their socialism would probably make Obama proud.

I've only been there once in 2000. I even acquired a New Zealand firearms permit and brought home a Winchester Model 1892 .44-40 and a Martini-Henry MkIV .577-450.

You can actually own what we call NFA items over there on a collector's license. However, nothing owned on a collector's license can ever be fired. That even pertains to cap and ball revolvers.

Personally I wouldn't consider it a good place to go as viewed from the firearms aspect.

Gouldsome, are you reading this??

The place doesn't sound so bad to me. I haven't decided if I would rather confront the no acess side or the no shooting side of it. I would wager a carefully selected residence location could be advantageous. If the dollar never recovers it's out of the question for me.

I looked into it more closely about a year ago. The immigration isn't easy - can't wade across like here. Like most places, they had a shortage of healthcare workers so wifey would have to be my mealticket in the door. Things may have changed, though.

I just thought you might like to know that in Canada the gov't has stopped charging the fees to renow firearm licenses. I would have paid $80 for five years.

The bad news is that the Conservative party didn't get a majority in the election, so they are somewhat limited in what they can do. Also, however, they still have a quite antigun platform, since they only say they would stop registering unrestricted guns and would keep all restrictions, licensing and prohibitions. They have a few progun people but a lot of antigun politicians and bureaucrats. Then there are all the other antigun politicians and police. It's amazing how much hatred of freedom there is. It's mass normaphobia. The federal gov't has been silent in the face of all the confiscation drives there have been in the last three years.

The Libertarian party has a better gun platform but get very few votes and the Christian Heritage party may have a better platform but I have only seen vague statements.

Owners here of many prohibited guns cannot get permits to take them to the ranges. Others can be used.
