1. Sarcasm here or good wishes? Clear as mud. I'll just respond thanks, either way.
  2.
With David's permission:

I received this with my dewat NAC Brit marked Savage dewat that I sold for another c3 bucket list item. My understanding is that it was with the original gun going back to the 1950s at the estate. The gun and drum both had some brown patina from less than ideal storage as visible in pictures here.

The drum's mechanics seem to be very good and functional in my tests although I did not shoot this in my gun. Internals are nice original blue and retained grease inside which probably protected the mechanics. The nickel rotor has minor brown discoloration. The exterior of the drum has a few minor dings as pictured which I do not believe would affect function and could be corrected. The surface is mostly brown/grey with very light surface rust spots over maybe 5%-10% of the surfaces than may even be removed with bronze wool. These are not deep and probably would not produce visible pitting if you re-blued the drum. This is accurately pictured in the close ups. The winder has better surfaces and is as pictured.

If you need references, please let me know. I have done my best to accurately represent it with pictures in natural light but please ask questions if needed and first post or PM to me by timestamp that states you will take without condition gets the drum.

Withdrawn.

I don't know if "most" is accurate as companies like Interarms brought many thousands of C&R WWII machine guns and DDs back in the 1950's and early 1960s.
  4. It would be safe to say that several very experienced individuals in the MG community that I've spoken with including a lawyer I know specializing in NFA law who disagrees with Bob on his assessment of marking requirments for an individual and also that the ATF considers it "manufacturing" of an MG for an individual reactivation. I am aware and have stated Bob's point to them and I am only stating facts that others have another opinion on which I'm not qualified to considered and expert. I certainly respect his opinion and many many years of work in the area.
  5. This is very interesting and I guess I'm not suprised. Wonder what former artillery guys on here have experienced? Glad I normally shoot subguns and non-belt fed stuff when it comes to this issue. And, wonder if wearing certain kinds of goggles like swimming goggles would help keep pressure more stable?? It would look pretty funny!
  6. Tom - thanks for all your help and knowledge in this endeavor. I really appreciate it.
  7. WTB - Savage finned 28 barrel: I recieved my form 1 back from the ATF on my British proofed dewat New York address/Patent date 28. It needs a new barrel and resting bar. I want to put a round "S" Savage and not a replacement barrel on the gun. If the barrel has a Cutts on it already (type 3 ok), I'd consider that although I have a proper type 2 if not. Also, I would like a resting bar - if an original is not available, I'll probably order one from PK but thought I'd check. PM me with what you have. Thank you!
  8. No police department is open here, either and but just found a company who just opened back up. I'm guessing this may have slowed down Form 4 submissions a bit recently as many people don't try themselves?
  9. Dire Straits was very popular here in the USA in the 1980's with a number of #1 hits. Great band. As an owner of a British marked early Savage 1928, I really appreciate the picture!
  10. Board member has an Savage (not stevens) barrel for me. Found a type 2 Cutts W/O bullet logo thanks to heads up by a board member. Ok, Unblued Savage bolt and the actuator should be S or R marked? Will any early stock without a re-enforcement work or are there Savage marked stocks? I probably need a Savage lower as well instead of the scrubbed one on the gun now. The more I look at this gun, the more I think it has been put together here - I've seen many Military refurbed guns in my life and I don't think that this was one of them.
  11. Thanks for everyone contributing to this thread - I've learned a lot and found a couple parts. The bluing has really cleaned up with some bronze wool and CLP. The resting bar is Stevens marked. I've been busy but will put some additional pics up soon. What type of bolt would have been used on this early gun? A blue or unblued Savage?

Kp31 Suomi 40 round drums are hard to find! I've imported magazines from Europe before and all magazines require a US import permit. Don't get caught..
  13. Thanks again for all the info everyone. Greatly appreciated. I've looked over the barrel where it attaches to the receiver - there are no marks and the bottom is destroyed with the two pins. Am I correct that the notch in front of Brit proofs (pictured in my original post) on the right side of the receiver near the barrel was used as a witness mark for barrel? There are no such notches on the barrel itself. In any case, it sounds like consensus is that I need an S marked barrel with a type 2 Cutts and this will be very hard to find. If anyone has one, please let me know. It's near Christmas - maybe a miracle will happen? I've attached the requested picture of the bottom of the frame where the serial has been scrubbed and re-blued.
  14. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Form 1 has been mailed off so I have a bit of time to plan and talk to Thompson rewat specialists/get on the list. I agree, if it is NAC assembled, why not re-build it as "correctly" as possible. It will never be an original like those in the British museums - I get that - but the receiver will retain its history. To address a few points and to bring up a few more questions: As TD points out - I have no evidence proving that the gun wasn't just a receiver when it arrived in the 50s and before the original owner got it. Could it be British armorers? Maybe the physical evidence suggests not? So as I pointed out, my barrel has no letter markings and the unmarked Cutts - both suspect I assume? I'd like to know what barrel and Cutts is on huggytree's S-21792 (or any other commercial savage from that period?) The lower has had the serial ground off and reblued. I agree that the gun will need reblue because of the work needed on the front end. The rust is really surface - not really much pitting at all on the receiver, if any. The scratches or rub marks on the gun are also surface/removal of the blue and not deep. Interestingly, they are ONLY on the receiver and do not continue to the other parts in most areas - possibly indicating that these were done when the receiver was separated from the rest (Maybe by NAC??). Neat to hear that it is a Colt era WPS drum. I assume these are quite rare?
