Lyman rear sight rivets

Recommended Posts

I have rivets that I had made to the ordnance drawing. They are

mild steel with a full anneal so they are soft and will deform properly

to hold the sight. if you just make rivets from mild steel they will not -

in my opinion and experience - be soft enough to hold without

becoming loose from the vibration of firing.

Here is the fixture we use for riveting. There are 4 hardened dowel

pins in the correct pattern to act as the anvil for the underside (inside

the receiver) of the head of he rivets.

We put the anvil in position on the inside of the receiver and clamp

the entire barreled receiver down onto the anvil on the table of

a milling machine so it will not rebound when struck. We then use

a tapered punch with a convex ground end about 3/18" in diameter

and make four strikes to shape/deform the head of the rivet in a four

leaf clover pattern.
