Ron Mills
Anyone perhaps planning a visit to the great RIA museum, be advised it is undergoing renovations and will reopen sometime next year. If you have not been there, the collection is impressive. Cheers,Ron
inertord
Army and Press release: https://www.army.mil/article/243876/rock_island_arsenal_museum_prepares_for_major_renovation Quote: The artifacts on site will be reduced as part of the Armys collection reform efforts, Allie said. They will be relocated to other Army museums or storage facilities where they can be recalled for exhibits by any of the Armys museums, or they will be made available to other government entities or historical institutions. Rumor is that most of the weapons displays will be eliminated to make a more political friendly and family safe environment, like the Smithsonian. Ron Mills
Well. Glad I made a few visits there years ago. By the way, Hastings Museum in Hastings, Nebraska has a great firearms display that I doubt will be disturbed. It is a privately owned museum. There is a Savage 28A1 there. SlickG
Has anyone been to Fort Lee since Aberdeen moved its stuff there? Live about an hour away but never have made it down there.
Frank Iannamico
A friend of mine visited Ft Lee a few years ago, he said most of the stuff from Aberdeen was still in crates. Aberdeen had a nice weapons museum and lots of armor outside. I remember that at one time Aberdeen was planning a huge indoor display area for the armor because the weather was taking its toll, it never happened. Another decent museum was the one at Fort Knox, most of it was moved, I think, to Fort Benning, GA Rock Island had a pretty good weapons display and they had note books explaining some history about each weapon, but a lot of it was inaccurate. The museum was on the base and you had to have a background check done to get there. The base civilian guards did the background checks. There are articles on most of the museums in back issues of SAR. The online articles seem to be missing some photos... Currently it is not accessible to the public. RIA and Benning post regular updates on their Facebook pages of their progress. Of all the services the Army has the absolute worst museum program. johnsonlmg41
Marine Corps museum pics. In one trip I did the MC museum, the NRA museum when the Thompson stuff was on display, and the two CIA museums at Langley....they frown on pics, but it was cool to see, though minimal on guns. Suppressed high standards, DEAR guns, FP45 (Liberators), and an M14 are all I recall. Free polygraph too! LOL
