Am I to understand this correctly? Someone took a WH 1928, then stripped it, replaced all the parts with *colt* parts, buffed it to look Colt blue and then tries to pass that off as an improvement?

Now it's your money, you can spend it as you see fit. But it's a WH 28. It's whole point in life is to be a shooter gun, not some wannabe Colt.

The mental image I get is that you did this kind of transformation:

or maybe like this

I can not speak for this particular gun unless know the s/n.

Let us be clear, I’m not passing off anything. I service WH guns by correcting their faults and bringing them as closely as possible to the GI specification, insuring function and longevity. I certainly don’t have a closet full of Colt parts, GI parts are used normally where needed, no WH internals are used. However, the customer can provide whatever he likes, and if he sends me Colt parts, I will install them if they are up to snuff.

Finishing is very carefully done, and the customer can choose whatever grade he desires (within limits) from GI to deluxe. All finish is done by hand, I don’t power buff and won’t do a “pimp shine”. Folks ask all the time for a “Colt blue” and my response is that I can’t replicate that process. Finishes are high quality and exceed the factory in every instance (even the Colt in some aspects).

Much time & effort is required to correct a WH gun and one so treated is worth a premium, to think otherwise wold be to deny anything was needed in the first place. The WH reputation is well deserved, but after correction these can be very good guns.

I pride myself on providing a gun that is wholly corrected and finely finished, but make no claim to be replicating anything. A WH that leaves my shop is a fine & worthy Thompson, as it should have been to begin with, but it’s still a WH and I make no claims to the contrary. The same can be said for the GI and Colt guns I service, as well as all others.

I think it unfair to confuse what I offer with the claims in a sales add. If you want to know what I represent, ask me.

PK, I sincerely apologize for the tone of my first post, which was not reflective in any way of the way I felt. I certainly regard you as a craftsman of the highest order, and a credit and great resource to our community. I have edited my original post.

Yup, yer wrong. My West Hurley "shooter" was a tad rough around the edges. Cheap site. Cheap wood. What's wrong with replacing some parts, having the edges smoothed out some, and passing off the improvements as..er....improvements?

PS: You should be banned for posting pictures of Mr. Moonwalk!

Sounds like a really nice gun to me. Especially if PK did some work on it. I don't see where he said it was a colt or that he wanted a colt price for it, he wanted $14600 not $24900...

Actually, the ad doesn't seem that deceiving to me with the possible exception of "THIS WEAPON HAS ALL THE LUSTRE AND REFINEMENT OF THE GENUINE ARTICLE", and that is even subject to opinion.

He/She has clearly stated that it is a West Hurley gun.

If I were going to make more than a quick reference to PK in an ad to sell a gun, I would ask him first.

Nevertheless, it sounds like a nice gun.

You don't even need to send it to PK to get it working! :P

I believe I'd examine PK's work before I posted any kind of opinion on it. "All of the luster and refinement of the genuine article" is an accurate statement. You have only to examine PKs work to believe it. The statement was made by the seller, and is his opinion only.

I'll bet that he's sorry to have to sell his TSMG!

i have only seen Pauls work in pictures, and was going to have a sbr done by him.{ then i got in the Road Warrior mode of thing's}and decided a nice blued flashy Thompson. would not be my go to the mountains gun.so chucked the s.b.r.project.and that was okay it gave somebody a free spot for Pauls work much sooner.

i do know of the guy in Reno.he's fair and honest. so I'm sure the gun is great as he explain's. he is just using some terms dealers use from time to time to sell something. not sure if he needed Pauls approval.I have seen ad's all over the net saying built by ohio ord. and using such and such receiver.

by this gunsmith or that.once we cross the bridge to get everybody's approval to speak.or to word the ad's.{ all is lost }

I am sure somebody will get a nice shooter wes-hurl for a price.that maybe they did not want to spend on a primo Colt.

today who shoots the heck out of a Colt anyways.unless maybe if you have ten or so laying around.and you have a real beater to blast.I did at one time.now my Kansas blaster is loooong gone!!

we all have to sit back sometime and take a break.there are alot more things on the plate in the world. then somebodies Tommy ad to worry about.

the first order of business. to still keep what we already have. and see that it stays that way.and enough ammo to keep the pups fed.

or what you will have is a pricey wall hanger.

Well, there is no doubt that PK's work is top notch- I know first hand.

I have had more than one person swear up and down that my registered converted 27A1 (built by PK) was a Colt Thompson.

As always, beauty (and opinions) are always in the eye's of the beholder!

Yeah, yer wrong. I own a couple Thompsons, and plan on throughly "dehorning" the entire gun. All sharp edges are going to disappear, going to get an appropriate buff and as deep a blue as I can buy. It's not a collectable, it's a WH M1A1, works great and will be passed down to someone in the family if we will still be allowed to do so. It's NOT an investment... it's a toy. Someone already cut it for drum use, so I added the quick change barrel system, a 9mm conversion, bought a 40 barrel from PK, am working on the 7.62x25 conversion and will buy Merle's 22 conversion when he gets it in gear. Even have a shortened butt stock for competition use as well as a suppressed barrel setup in 45.

I enjoy my toys... they're not safe queens by any stretch of the imagination, and I have really no investment tied up in the gun... my 55 inch Plasma cost more this year than the gun did, back in '95.

I sent my M1 off to PK a few years ago. It came back looking (and working) like a piece of art. I can tell you it sure didn't look that way, nor work that way, when I sent it to him.

PK is a Thompson guru.

Further, I don't see any problems with the listed ad.

YMMV

I received my WH28 back from PK just before Christmas. It is a quality piece now in all respects, WH or no. I couldn't be happier with it. Folks who see it/shoot it at the range do a double take when I tell them it is a Westy. Someone must really need the money to let their gun go after Paul has worked on it.

Regards,

Earle

I foresee a day that a prospective buyer of West Hurley's will beg the question: "Is it a Diamond K Hurley?".

Do any of you all have Thompsons with the Diamond K proof stamp?

I just wish I had the means to get the one mentioned at the beginning of this post. It's even in the same state as me, 1 transfer no class 111 dealer how sweet is that... Edited by GUTTERRATT

PK set the stock in fiberglass in order to correct some missing wood around the slide. Didn't refinish the wood because it really didn't need it. Everything is beautiful now and the action is like butter. He also gauged my 100 rd drum which even Merle B couldn't make run. The whole experience was 1.) worth the wait and 2.) worth every penny. Mine won't be for sale until my wife has it on a form 5.

Paul Krogh rework a WH28 for me several years ago. .and rewatted a Savage Commercial 28,and both are still the centerpeice of my collection. The WH 28 has had several thousand rounds thru it with out one hickup, the Savage just doesn`t get used as often but functions flawlessly as well as Paul`s 21 internal set up in my 21.His wormanship and integrity should never be questioned.
