poihths
I'm looking for a fully professsional, formal appraisal, conducted to Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) standards, preferably by someone accredited or cerified by one of the "big four" appraiser's associations. Has anyone worked with an appraiser who operates at that level? I'd be very interested to hear about your experience. Thanks!
TD.
I don't know anything about the "big four" appraiser associations but I have seen some excellent written appraisals by noted author and Thompson expert Tracie Hill.
ron_brock
Im not sure the reason behind the appraisal, but I would recommend finding out if the appraisal services you reference have experts in C3 arms and specifically historic machine guns. If not, you are far better seeking out the services of a subject matter expert as TD suggests. Many factors affect the value of a Colt Thompson and your general historic gun appraiser will greatly over or under estimate value. I wont claim to be expert enough to offer an appraisal, but would be more than happy to discuss further with you amdmoffer guidance as I am sure many others will likewise offer. giantpanda4
And, since you and Ron (and me too!) are all in Michigan, send us a PM and we can maybe arrange to help you locally with your appraisal. There are many Michigan folks into Thompsons, and a lot of information. I think your best bet is to communicate with Tracie Hill in Ohio. If you are not in a hurry, attend one of the Thompson Collector organization show and shoots. The Hill family hosts the TATA show and shoot. You will get several appraisals, many without even asking! wwiifirearms
I do a lot of appraisals. Never had a problem with courts or insurance companies accepting them, but it may depend on your needs. I only know of one that does USPAP appraisals. I have never used them so I cannot say how good they are. Some of the USPAP Standards make it hard for a knowledgeable dealer to comply with and still be a dealer. Sometimes that means an accredited person is less current and knowledgeable on the item they are appraising. It may work better for art and real estate than firearms. I am considering becoming acredited, but havent had time. That being said, below is a link to the USPAP appraiser. https://www.dobranskyfirearmstactical.com/appraisals
poihths
Thanks so much to everybody who responded! After conferring further with the insurer, I decided to work with David Dobransky and his team. I'll be back when I can say how it went. His info is on his website at https://www.acropolisappraisals.com/meet-the-team.
ron_brock
Yes please let us know. It will be interesting to see how familiar he is with class 3 weapons and Colt Thompsons and how to judge parts originality. Do they typically site sources for their appraisals? mnshooter
Have difficulty believing that any appraisal company can even get close to the Thompson grading experience within the people on this board. And, they won't even know how much they don't know. Edited June 28, 2018 by mnshooter
