Digger
I was tidying up one of my drives recently and came across some screen shots I'd snapped a few years ago when I was teaching myself to use some 3D modelling software. And what better subject matter is there than the TSMG to kick start things. 99% of the mechanical's were mostly modeled and assembled but I didn't complete the furniture models. I even threw some ammo into the equation. See if you can pick some of the 'not quite' completed items...and any errors!!!!! I'd be interested in those. And, enjoy your Thanksgiving. benedw60
Hate to break it to you but the original ordnance drawings have a bunch of incorrect dimensions so if you made this from drawing from nfa toys or downloaded it from grabcad It might be pretty looking in computer land But if you were actually make post sample from the drawings you would not end up with a functioning gun
Digger
benedw60, Thanks for the feedback. I'm fairly confident my source material might be around the mark...
Kilroy
The selector switches... one has a hole the other does not? I’m looking for the errors...
DFisch
It looks like the fore grip mount touches off on the 14th rib instead of the proper 21st. I tried to count to see if there are 29 ribs but I kept losing track.
Digger
Kilroy, that was close. The Safety Lever has the hole through it as you can see in image 5. I have also attached the drawing detail of the hole through the Safety FYI. But you may have noticed the knurling that's supposed to be on the Rocker Pivot/Select Fire wasn't completed when I grabbed that screen shot. Well done. Digger
Doug, you're right. In the view you are looking at it's an exploded view so the grip mount has moved relative to the barrel and it is around the 14th fin and is partly concealed by it. I have attached a sectioned side view with everything in its correct place which shows the grip mount contacting the 21st fin. You have a sharp eye. benedw60
Theres multiple mistakes in your model so the original drawings are not 100% correct so asking everyone their opinions is pointless

He started a topic and invited critics. He knows where the interference in the parts are. Solidworks easily identifies that for the user. His model is impressive and I am sure it took many many hours to create.

benedw60
It might look impressive but if he used original drawings his model is still wrong Dont be impressed until he produces a shooting gun

I mean it.Even if it does appear to be chambered in .45 GAP.
Digger
Thanks for your feedback and comments all. It was interesting. mnshooter, you have piqued my interest. I have never heard of 45GAP ammo before and looked it up, so I’ve learnt something out of this. I’ll have to go back and dig out the model files for the ammo and check. I thought it was 45ACP and the drawings were vintage but now you’ve got me thinking.
Digger
Hi again mnshooter. I rummaged through my files of the ammunition model and found the primary files that I based the ammo model on. I liked the old drawing (45acp11) and the circumferential groove that is rolled around the shell in particular so I included that in the model. I've never seen any actual 45ACP's like that so I used it. I have also added screen shots of the ammo assembly to clarify. It's been interesting digging out these models. I worked on them around 10years ago.
Digger
Here's another group of screen shots of some select model components for your amusement. There may be imperfections that I've overlooked. Constructive feedback always welcome
Zoltar
Hi Digger, I'm new to this website but have an interest in the history of the Thompson. Your models look pretty good. They look pretty close to the photos of the 1921 photo's I've been studying. What drawings did you use to create them? Regards, Zoltar

Digger
Hello Zoltar, Welcome to the site. If you're into Thompson's there's probably not a better one. I've looked around over the years to find good engineering drawings of the Thompson eg at Doug Richardson's old site (even bought a few of his drawing sheets) & nfatoys.com among others. The best drawings I found however were in Traci Hill's book "The Ultimate Thompson Book". That has reproductions of what appears to be original Colt engineering drawings and are the best available that I have seen. Definitely worthwhile for you to get the book. These were the drawings that I used for the models above which should make them pretty close to the mark unless I've error-ed anywhere. halftrack, Thanks for the feedback
