You already have my deactivated example listed, 162659 . They used an early roll stamp for the MODEL OF 1928 markings, with the "US" and "A1" being retrospectively added by hand stamping, so this one started life as a model 1928.

There is another 1928A1 on the market over here in the UK at the moment, serial number S- 221992, which I note is not on your list.

US patent authorities demanded that a certain number of weapons would have to be stamped with the name/designation of the trademark that the manufacturer wanted to register/protect, in this case "TOMMY GUN". That number appears to have been 100,000; from around S-160 000 to S-260 000.

Hi Balder,

It is always good to see you on the Boards.

For the record, Auto-Ordnance Corporation did not have trademark protection for the term "Tommy Gun." The registered mark was only for the word "TOMMY" - and they were not the first to obtain trademark protection for this word.

See:

Small Arms Review magazine, Auto-Ordnance Trademarks, May 2010

TD,

Thanks, good to see you too. And thanks for sorting out the details on this issue. I've more or less retired from gun collecting, for several reasons. Sold a few pieces (who needs 13 Lugers, anyway?) and bought some. But I still have my early Savage 1928, although I am ashamed about the fact that is hasn't been to the range for a couple of years. Need to do something about that next year.

All the best, Merry Christmas to the members here and thanks to David for running a tight ship.
