I'm New Here So Hello

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I'm brand new here and almost brand new to full autos period. I took possession of my M1 Thompson at the end of March and its opened up a whole new world for me.

I hope to learn much from all of you in the future.

Thanks

Mike V.

Welcome. I also just received my M1 West Hurley a few weeks ago. I now have about 2000 rounds through it and am afraid I am going to wear it out. I have also enjoyed reading your writings on Black Powder Cartridge guns, I have most of your books. In fact I just got back from the range today with my Thompson and my side hammer 74 Sharps. Got a bunch of funny looks for the diverse pair.

Mike V. and Dieselten,

Welcome to you both!

Mike V.,

Is your M1 also a West Hurley, or a WWII era gun?

David Albert

dalbert@sturmgewehr.com

Dalbert: Its a WW2 gun made by Savage with a four digit serial #. I've gotten Frank's American Thunder II book and according to what I've read it was still all M1 except for the cross bolt buttstock. A few weeks ago I bought an M1 parts kit including early buttstock without the cross bolt. So I and stuck it on the M1 this weekend. It runs like a top and I've yet to experience a malfunction of any sort in about 1000 to 1500 rounds.

I was lucky to find this Thompson. Also I might add that I've also gotten an MP40, a STEN, and a North Korean made PPsh41. I'm really having a blast!

Dieselten: I'm glad you have gotten some good out of my work. A bunch of my BPCR Silhouette competition buddies think I went nuts when I started buying these subguns. I haven't given up the other stuff but to be honest I've studied WW2 history since grade school so its only natural to follow this path too.

four digit s/n???

Do you mind posting a pic of it (the s/n)?

And your comment about opening your world - that cannot be more true. There are so many things Thompson now that you will want to know about - that is just the fun of it. I think opening your wallet is true too.... just got back from the range tonite after magazine testing and realized how much ammo we burned thru!

But we did get a Thompson virgin tonite...! nothing compares to the grin after the first full auto firing!

Enjoy!

To help them ease over to the more rapid firing guns maybe you could load some 45 ACP black powder rounds.

It could be the start of a new class of shooting ... Black Powder Cartridge Subgun.

Believe it or not, one of my editors suggested that same thing about bp .45 ACP cartridges. I told him he would have to do the clean up.

Giantpanda4: I don't have a clue as to how to post pictures and I don't know if its proper to put up full serial #s, so how about I say its number is 16XX?

Mike,

Welcome to our addiction. And I guess most of us have read your fine writings over the years.

As for posting pictures, it's easy, after figuring out the routine the first time. You merely "park" your picture in a folder at a website location with a permanent connection to the Internet, and thus an IP address. Then, at the point in your message on this board where you want the picture to appear, you type a simple line of html code giving that address, with the short html code intro and ending. (I wrote down the syntax so I wouldn't forget.) If you right click on any of the pictures posted on this board, and click "properties", I think you will see the syntax...or any of us can show you in an E-mail.

I used to be a Korea specialist and linguist, and served in the ROK for a few years, but I've never gotten my hands on a DPRK-built PPSh-41 to test fire it. I do have a drum and a mag full of their ammo, from a guy who came down to visit, but didn't need the hardware after that. ;) I think you have an unusual firearm, among those legally registered here.

As for BP .45 ACP ammo, it would be interesting to see if one could get the recoil impulse to operate a blowback SMG, even with a reduced strength recoil spring and no Blish locking. And then, since the Thompson design lets so much unburned powder and debris back into the action, we would have to see how quickly the whole machine just grinds to a smokey halt. But it would be a fun experiment...to see if it would work at all, or at what rate of fire... perhaps a neat article, with pictures.

Let me add my welcome too,Mike...I`m also a longtime fan of your writing and like others here share a passion for fullauto collecting and shooting. The ppSH 41 is a real buzz gun,...mine ejects so strongly that overhead lighting is at risk.. ...now if we can just get the price of ammo to come down..ha,.. <_>

Thanks for the welcomes guys. Like I said I'm having a blast with the subguns. Having some land here in Montana I've set up my own very modest steel range to shoot them, so I'm really trying to learn how to hit with them.

That North Korean PPsh41 is a hoot. It looks like some un-talented high school kid's shop project but it runs 100%, except for one stick magazine. I was amazed the first time I shot it that brass came tinkling down out of the sky for it seemed like a couple seconds.

Got to go now and load up some bp rounds for the nationals in New Mexico that's coming up soon.

I'm getting the itch for another full auto. Any of you guys got any opinions on M2 Carbines? They seem awfully affordable.

Welcome Mike, glad to to have you along!

This board has an amazing amount of info tucked away in the corners as well as in the membership. When I first joined I spent all of my spare time for about two weeks going thru the old archives reading every thread to catch up on all I missed. I don't think it possible now with the wealth of material discussed over the past five years! You will find not only a great deal of full auto Thompson topics here but the semi autos are covered in depth also. There is no seperate forum for the semi autos, they are just mingled in with all else, so very much of it crosses over from one to the other. Many of us enjoy the war time history and law enforcement side of the Thompson but can't afford the cost of joining the finite full auto ranks.

Please post photos, that is how some of us live vicariously thru others! The instructions for posting should still be up in the Q&A faq section at the top of the boards, fairly easy using photobucket or similar site.

I as well have enjoyed your articles, the recent run of WW2 firearms has been particularly interesting for me. Again, welcome.

Thanks again for the welcomes. I went and did it today - I sent off the funds for an M2 Carbine. I'm nothing if not impetuous!

Guess I'll have to go to their board now too.

Addictive!

Welcome Mike and I too have enjoyed reading your books and articles over the years. I know what you mean about the North Korean PPSh clone being a real hoot to shoot as there is another dealer back home who has an original C&R Korean PPSh that is blood etched on much of its metal surface.

Good luck with your recent acquisition of the M-2 Carbine and if you don't have a good supply of 15 round magazines for the Carbine start buying them as most find they are more reliable than the 30 round magazine that was produced for the M-2 Carbine. Actual USGI 30 round magazines work much better than the aftermarket 30 rounders that you see around most of the gunshows.

Mike, you're hooked. All it takes now is a steady IV of cash!!!! The M2 has been on my list for a while, found a C&R Inland and let it get away. Great guys here with knowledge on about anything.

Shoot safe,

Ken

Welcome Mike ! I'm also a big fan of your writings on BP ca'tridge shooting. Coming from the opposite direction, I've been looking over Remington Creedmoor class type rifles as my next acqusition.

Proud to have you on board, and enjoy your Tommy.

Thanks for the comments. I was out shooting the North Korean PPsh41 a couple nights back while my wife took photos. That thing sounds like a chainsaw running! If I can ever get enough spare time to figure out posting photos I'll put one up.

Antitus (spelling?) I sort of have a Remington Creedmoor that I shoot regularly in BPCR Silhouette. By sort of, its buttstock and action are original but it has a new 32" Kreiger .45-90 barrel. A natural question is, "Where is the original barrel and forend?"

Here's the story. A Montana guy had car trouble over in a small Oregon town and ended up in one of those "shade tree" mechanic's shops. While waiting he spotted this Remington action & buttstock on a shelf. When he asked where the barrel was the mechanic said, "My brother needed a new jack handle so he welded that old gun's barrel on for one."

That's not the end. The Montana guy bought the action and buttstock and then traded it to gunsmith John King of Kila, Montana, who just set it on a shelf and left it there fore a time. Then he had a customer send back this Kreiger barrel saying it was defective and wouldn't shoot worth a hoot. So he replaced it with another brand, and put the Kreiger on this Rolling Block. It is now one of the best shooting single shot rifles I've ever gotten my hands on and I'm going to use it next week in New Mexico for the national bpcr silhouette championships.

PS: (The guy who sent the barrel back and demanded another barrel also sent the second one back saying it wouldn't shoot good either. I guess we all know what wouldn't shoot good.)

Thanks for listening.

Mike,

The Remington Creedmoor just has such elegant lines, and with a Krieger tube it HAS to shoot well. 'Nuff said -

"Anticus" is my handle and is Latin for ancient or crazy. My wife says it fits. I don't know why...
