The Tsmg Transport Case That Might Or Could Have Been

Recommended Posts

A couple years ago I scored this little certificate from Camp Perry dated 1940. I had copies scanned made into blank forms which I use when I take a guest shooting. I type their name on to the blank form with a period typewriter and give it to them as a souvenir of the TSMG shooting experience.

This was the inspiration for my long term case project along with Dan Block's work reproducing the British transport case, which helped spur me on to the completion. I started with a gutted and empty Mine Detector case.

After a lot of designing and planning it finally was finished late last fall, but winter set in for too long a time. Finally it's spring and time to head to the range. I'm no cabinet maker or carpenter so I spent a lot more time on this project than a person of that trade would have. I was a auto body repair tech/painter by trade, for most of my life, so of course I used automotive repair and refinish materials in the building process.

This is meant to be a transport case as well as a display stand for a Thompson 1928 and a German MP40. I made it to fit either my 1928A1 without compensator or my WH 1928 with compensator, plus accessories, manuals, tools, oiler and magazines. The guns and other items fit snugly in the case and are well padded. It is fairly heavy when full.

And Display set-up:

"Wow" That is just too cool. I gotta keep a eye out for one of those.

That's a great case Uncle, with lots of room to tinker with.

I'm bidding on a vintage leather covered gun case that I plan

on removing the existing partitions and adding new ones to fit

a 1928, or making it into a Thompson magazine case.

There's lots of vintage suitcases and instrument cases out there

to modify if one has the desire. It doesn't have to be steel. The two

benefits of a steel case would be; it's much easier to hide the partition fasteners

since your repainting it any way and of course the added security.

Nice job,

Darryl

Very, very nice. I especially like the foldouts. A friend sent me this link to a tool chest that may be the best I have ever seen. Yours rivals it in terms of the thinking and workmanship that went into its design and construction.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I'm glad that you enjoy the case. I am somewhat case obsessive. I like different types of cases, especially military cases for different functions, which I use for TSMG functionality and accessories and ammo. Some of you have seen my range box. This was purchased from a retired LE Officer and I refinished it and had an Artist decorate it with some very fine artwork.

One of my favorite cases for storage and ammo is the US Army Company Barber Kit/Trunk. They are very sturdy and about 15inX7inX9in, and hold over 500 rounds of 45ACP or a combo of drums mags or whatever you can think of. I have collected 5 or 6 from around $10.00 to 35.00.

Another source for neat cases is the Signal Corp. I have a couple that are heavy canvas with leather reinforced bottoms. Nice for ammo.

Like Darryl posted, there are lots of interesting cases around if you think creative. I really enjoy looking for these types of things to compliment my gun collection and shooting hobby. Please feel free to steal any idea you see here. Here's my use of the Navy shipboard 45 pistol "board" or arms locker rack. I kept the old one untouched, and I carefully added ends to the newer one to make a range display stand and padded the "holster" areas to protect the pistols. It was simple and makes a very nice display.

Of course my Combat Company Field desk, also serves as ammo, holster, scope, sling, and accessory storage. I also have the smaller squad field desk, but that is under restoration.

And these little cases, which just fit a "L" drum.

Fine looking stuff you got there. Ever think about going to a TCA or TATA show and showin' it off? I'd love to see it in person!

Thanks for sharing!
