Kilroy
Today I picked up a M65 Reising. It came with three magazines and two stocks. One stock is a sporter stock and the other is a military stock. The rifle is drilled and tapped on the left side for a scope. It is inscribed on the left side "G. M. ALBRIGHT". When I picked it up it was wearing the sporter stock and the first thing I did when I got home was swap it to the military stock. After playing around with it I realized that in the military stock the trigger does not have enough travel to release the sear and fire, it hits the stock first. I out it back in the sporter and everything works ok. After examining the stocks side by side, I noticed the trigger cut outs were different. I then came to the theory that the military stock is for a MC58 due to the longer cut out and the cut out in the trigger housing and the sporter stock may be original M65. The MC58 stock does have a DoD stamp on it. The rifle's serial number is 8191 I believe. I paid $480 for it. How'd I do? Any thoughts on the stock issue? While I was hoping it was, I am assuming that this was a civilian issued piece and not a USMC piece, correct? http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/77E47CE7-9F0F-45A5-9498-8773EBF6A48A_zpsraakizbf.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/681998EC-F102-4474-8CBC-1457763B232B_zpsx2rgon5p.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/E20E49B9-2265-4BD4-8C5F-4707EAE0C167_zpspgqccnxf.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/0060B661-D3C7-4F24-8655-37EC70DE06F9_zps3ikieods.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/3594A47C-615A-47C2-9C6E-04E102C48D36_zps6pvii4oe.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/D07D5C3F-4824-41A7-8995-D7090EC235C3_zpsgni2f8u9.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/65DFF59E-087D-4AC9-9AA4-7FA015B783C3_zpsjq0pzdan.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/B96CF180-05C4-42FD-8117-600A470148AD_zpsqmxnbngm.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/8703ADFF-C4CC-4982-AA69-BE0457B48348_zpsec3hhplw.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/75696E1C-5DA4-4FFD-A2A3-BC5A3B5E3785_zpsikcat5w5.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/3F0D2644-D407-4C1F-97CA-15A2E54D8BA5_zpsitcmkxlc.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/4138933D-EC39-4DCF-8DF3-96D0DE599DA3_zpsgkl14gdr.jpg Sporter stock:http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/352E9538-FC8F-410C-B4F5-B24A8239FE22_zpscygvzcqb.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/E8EB7DCF-F0C5-4F56-B3E3-C883F494B334_zpsifpe9vcb.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/5989B170-8B4A-4520-9209-8C3F269CE571_zpswokxpry8.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/28391BB9-BE0D-46BC-9C8A-99117BDCFAB0_zpswtgyxhtq.jpg Magazines:http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/14A8E9C6-2D6A-4BAD-854D-61DDC44D3E49_zps9frtton6.jpghttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/RedSpecialSS/M65/E74417A1-7682-4FB4-915A-83C70458A720_zpsllcivycp.jpg
car wash chris
Hey thanks for all the pictures, I think you did great. I considered one at the Ohio Gun Collectors Association this weekend. It was #15286 with a rusted barrel and no mag $495. Chris
dalbert
Kilroy, You did fine for the price. It's in an MC-58 stock, and the original Model 65 stock has the decorative stock inlay. The MC-58 trigger guard has the cutout for the different safety on that rifle. At serial number 8191, it's outside of the customarily accepted Marine Corps use range, though that range has not been officially confirmed. Once you shoot it, you'll be hooked. Congratulations! Car Wash Chris, I missed the Model 65 you mentioned at OGCA yesterday, but I had my 4 1/2 year old son with me, which means that I didn't make it through the entire show, and my attention was distracted at times. Thank you for noting the serial number. I will add it to my data. Thanks! David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com

Did the barrel have blemishes on the outer surface, or did you look at the rifling? David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com

dalbert
Kilroy, I was not aware of a trigger issue with a Model 65 installed in an MC-58 stock, but apparently you are experiencing such an issue. My suggestion is to keep an eye out for a replacement Model 65 stock. There was one on eBay that sold just within the last month. Otherwise, my suggestion is to "rock" the embellished Model 65 stock that came with it. It's an example of the post war inclination to sporterize, or otherwise "un-militarize" a firearm to better fit the "firearm fashion" of the era, as weird as that sounds today. n64atlas
The Mc 58 stock needs to be linleted a bit for the safety to clear. Look at the M-65 inleting and copy it to the Mc-58 stock. It should work fine for you.I see it has been drilled and tapped for a side mount scope. There are several variation on the hole spacing for the side mounts for the Reising series. Some the back hole is closer, others it is under thr rear sight. All are aftermarket hols as far as we know. Even on the later sporters like the M150 and M151 As to the "rusty" looking M65, this is normal for the type of park they put on these. It looks rusty but is not. My earliest M65 has this color. Kilroy
The 'rust parkerizing' perfectly matches my M55's finish. Are you sure it's the safety that's causing the problem? The safety can engage and disengage, it appears that the trigger does not travel rearward enough to release the sear. I'll try another stock first before I start doing any sort of serious wood removal. I figure a rat tail file will probably be the tool of choice for this operation? With my cheap harbor freight calipers it appears the spacing on the scope holes is 2.75", do you have any suggestions for a scope mount? I'd like to get one, preferably a vintage piece rather than one that resembles a weaver rail etc.
n64atlas
Look at the inletting of the sporterized stock compared to the MC 58 stock. Remove wood on the MC 58 stock to match that inletting. There might be one other factor that is stopping the travel of the trigger. It might have a later trigger group that has a trigger adjustment screw. Does the action work okay out of the stock? Check to see if the bolt is going all the way forward as well.. Just a bit back and the disconnecter will stop the trigger from working. Clean any crud from around the back of the barrel

David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.comDavid, what is th commonly accept serial number range? Up to about 6000 to 6100...Somewhere in that range is the likely end of the USMC production run.
