deerslayer
I have a barrel from the cave of wonders. The front end is threaded smaller and there is an unmarked compensator that screws on. What do you guys think? I suspect a remade "s" marked barrel. Original Gi barrel for comparisons.

TD.
And that shows everyone how a skilled machinist can create a Colt clone barrel. I wonder what Merle had in mind on this project. Thanks for sharing!
TennesseeTaylor95
Is the threaded portion on the reworked Savage barrel .578" x 28? My only guess for doing something like that so it would make it easier to swap out the compensator for a suppressor without needing an adapter. Just a thought. Sig
still has an S mark, yes? Hard to remove that without removing much material
Motorcar
And yet still chambered for .45? So he didn't set it up for one of his .22 conversions, maybe that was the end goal to put the .22 inside that barrel and it just never got done? john
Mounting a can is also my guess. What size are the threads?
gijive
It is an early Savage made barrel that has been re-threaded to accept a Colt Type I compensator.
deerslayer
Agreed with the barrel origin. Is this in fact a colt type 1 comp?

It appears to have been refinished at some point as well.
TD.
gijive knows his Colt stuff! Yes, that is a Colt Type 1 compensator (that has been refinished). I have never known this Type 1 compensator to be reproduced. Doug Richardson manufactured a Type 1 style compensator without markings but with the larger Type 2 compensator diameter. Those with my Amateur's Guide book can turn to page 178 and see the differences in diameter of the Type 1 and Type 2 compensators when installed on a Colt barrel. The installation of a Type 1 compensator on an original Colt 21A barrel usually resulted in some discoloration on the barrel right behind the compensator. See page 31 in my newest book, Thompson: Colt's, West Hurley's & More, for a picture of this discoloration on the beautiful New Mexico Prison Colt's. Also see pages 22 and 28 for additional pictures of the rear of this small diameter Type 1 compensator.
Got Uzi
Perhaps he was working on a Colt clone barrel with a correct comp for a display gun or something else?
