45 ACP Ammo

Recommended Posts

I normally run S&B in my Thompson, however due to all the panic buying, which I can't for the life me figure out, ammo is in short supply. Has anyone had any experience with brands such a Silver Bear, Great Lakes, PMC , Aguila, Norma, Magtech, Tula, or Fiocchi? I understand that Silver Bear is steel cased so I have always shied away from it and never used it, but does it present any issues in a full auto Thompson. if I only had more brass to reload.

Tiz,

You have quite an international list there - Silver Bear and Tula (Russia); Great Lakes (MI, USA); PMC (Korea); Aguila (Mexico); Norma (Sweden); Magtech (Brazil); Fiocchi (Italy); and your old standby S&B (Czech).

The only one I have used in 45ACP is Fiocchi. It is good ammo, both under the Fiocchi name and also their Perfecta name. I have had excellent experience with Norma 7.62x51 and would highly recommend that brand, but I have no idea how they load their 45. I have also had excellent results with Magtech 9mm NATO, which works great in my subguns, including the MP40 which needs the hotter NATO ammo. I would guess their 45 would be good for Thompsons. As noted by MOHAWK64, PMC has been well respected ammo. I have shot a lot of their 30 carbine over the years, but semi-auto only.

As you noted, I personally steer clear of steel-cased ammo in my Thompsons. Primary concerns are wear and tear on the extractor and proper extraction in full auto. Some folks shoot a lot of steel-cased ammo in full auto guns, but I prefer not to.

Once again thanks for the input. I have used PMC, Magtech, Wolf and some others, though not in the Thompson.

I shoot mostly Blazer Brass. I've got a stash of S&B that I'll transition to when the Blazer's used up. Also used Amer. Eagle, Win White Box and Rem UMC but none of the brands you mention. The Remington stuff is way dirtier than everything else, I won't be buying any more of it once my on hand stuff id gone.

Blazer brass is good ammo well. Used to get it at Walmart for $8.97 / box.

When was that? It is at least double that now.

I've had trouble with Blazer Brass in both of my '28's. Not sure why.

Usually use S&B, Fiocci, Win white box, Magtech, Aguila or Remington.....all function fine.

Incidentally, the green and white boxes of Remington 9mm are underpowered and will run away every time in both my S&W 76 and Sten MkII, but their .45 runs well in my Tommy's.

Go figure.

Tiz,

How much brass would you like?

Tracie

Tracie,

Are you serious? If so what would the cost be? Send me a PM and thanks for the generous offer. I could trade a Magazine Feed Lip repair tool for the brass if your interested in one.

Me too I want to make the TATA event with sandman57. Speaking of Ammo now that I used the Tiz Tool And my mags work I am beginning to reload for the TSMG. I got loads that work in my Glocks no problem with 230gr ball FMJ and hard cast and some recipes listed on this board. I have a stash of brass so now I am cleaning and sorting primer size. I am not sure whether to say thanks or stop reading here. Hahaha

I normally run my reloads. At this point I will have trouble shooting up all the ammo I have on hand. I do have a large stock of Federal Red box, and Winchester white box. Both have worked well. I still have a few cases of the Fiochi- and for some reason it does NOT like to run well in my Thompsons. Not just one, all or them. Three are originals, one a welded up post sample. I sell that off to guys wanting pistol ammo. Failure to go bang appears to be a light primer strike, so some interference in chambering. If some one wants too pay exorbitant prices plus shipping I will be happy to sell it B)

I've been doing yard work, house work, truck and motorcycle maintenance and reloading. I also found I have a lot more brass than I need. So if anyone needs some clean, deprimed 45 ACP or 9mm Luger, PM me. I currently have about 1500 45's and about 5-6 thousand 9mm. Thanks

I found that the Remington/UMC bulk ammo didn't provide a steady cadence in my Thompsons. It just didn't sound right. So I sold my last 4,000 rounds and replaced it with S&B. I found a deal and even made a few bucks in the process. I sold the Remington for 24 cents per so it went quickly. The S&B runs great. I also have a bunch of Federal AE and it runs fine. I steer clear of the Blazer Brass because of the small primer pockets although I have been leaving the brass at the range lately. Prices have been cheap enough that I don't feel like reloading and I have plenty of brass if I ever do.

I had a number of issues in my mixed head stamp ammo in my WH 21clone, some run some lite primer strikes. I bough 7K from a friend. OK, so don't go there on my WH, but I checked the firing pin, measures same as NOS ones I have, put in a new Stevens hammer although my Savage looked good almost no wear still figuring ammo as the bad guy. Then I got the Tiz mag tool, I fixed all my xx mags, i have a variety of those makers, and presto.... It runs like a sewing machine. This TSMG is now a eater of anything. So to give my stash a break, reloads are next. If you priced 45ACP lately reloads are looking better on the ole wallet. since I have a stash of that no excuse to get my Dillon working.
