WTS: Thompson Paper Items - Good Stuff for Everyone!

Recommended Posts

I have a bunch of Thompson, and Thompson related items that I will be putting up for sale. Seems like a good time to let some new collectors and old collectors add a few items they might not have to their collections. I've accumulated a lot of TSMG stuff over the years, and for some of it, I don't need to retain multiple copies. So here's a chance to buy some good stuff from my collection, as well as a few items from Bill Helmer's collection.

  1. Original French Military M1 Thompson mechanism poster, very good condition, folded, $150. I ended up buying a duplicate of a French poster I have on the wall next to my desk, and this will be a great opportunity for someone to acquire one. It measures 25 ½” x 39”. Shipping will be $2.75 via first class mail. Don’t think about this one too much...I’ll be surprised if it’s not the first item to sell. Where else can you find an original M1 Thompson poster? SOLD

2. Original Auto Ordnance Handbook of the Thompson Submachine Gun, Model of 1928, Model of 1921, Thompson Semi-Automatic Carbine Model of 1927 – 2nd version, WITHOUT COVER, $100. Again, this manual is missing its cover, and the first page is starting to separate, and it has various stains and a small hole in the outer back page. I’ve had it in my collection for many years, and decided someone would want to add it to their collection, since these are hard to find. Shipping will be $2.59 via first class mail. I doubt this one will last long at this price, also.

3. TM 9-215, Thompson Submachine Gun, Cal. .45, M1, October 10, 1942, $60. This is an original TM for the M1 TSMG, and is 52 pages long. It is the Raritan Arsenal version, and has the large Ordnance Office stamp that can be seen on the front of it, as well as other cross-outs and notations. It’s in good condition, with some minor stains and browning from age. Shipping for this will be $3.00 via first class mail. SOLD

4. 1940 Auto-Ordnance Handbook, (Version 2 per my collector guide) (Model of 1928, Bridgeport Address), Good (minus) condition, with some small edge tears and creases. (These manuals are fairly fragile), $35. This will ship via first class mail for $2.50.

5. FM 23-40, December 31, 1941 Edition, Good condition, lots of unit markings, as can be seen in the photos, $40. This will ship via first class mail for $2.50.

6. (Advanced Thompson Collector Item) FM 23-40, December 31, 1941 Edition, 1947 printing, Good (minus) overall condition, with some stains and markings from an old price tag, which can be seen on front, $50. This will ship via first class mail for $2.50.

7. The World’s Machine Pistols and Submachine Guns, by Thomas Nelson and Daniel Musgrave, 1980, $60. This book is in good (minus) overall condition. The dustcover had a lot of tape repairs and tears on it, and I have repaired it with Brodart acid-free tape, and placed it in a Brodart library quality dustcover protector. This edition has become hard to find. It’s 673 pages long, and should be in everyone’s library who frequents this board. This will be shipped by Media Mail for $4.75.

SOLD

The following 3 items are property of Bill Helmer, author of the 1969 classic TSMG book titled “The Gun That Made The Twenties Roar.” He is the link between us and the Thompson’s past. He interacted with Eickhoff, Payne, and Goll directly while researching his book. These are items from his collection that I’ve been selling for him over the past several years, and all proceeds go to Bill.

I have 4 copies of "The Quotable Al Capone" available. These are the last ones. This is a rarely seen, 44-page Chicago specialty publication that was written by Mark Levell and Bill Helmer, along with the help of Ron Kovar in 1990. It is a guide to Chicago gangland of the 1920's and 30's, and includes many quotations of Al Capone that help to understand how he viewed doing business in Chicago. Included in the text is a 6-page summary of the Thompson Submachine Gun, written by Helmer. This is a cool item to add to any Thompson or gangster collection. The cover has a simulation bloody handprint that is featured on the front and back cover, and also features a Capone family picture that had not been published previous to this endeavor. These softcover books are still in the wrap. Bill made a small slit in the front of the wrap, and autographed each book "Bill Helmer," as can be seen in the picture below. These are $50 each, plus $3.00 first class shipping.

All 4 are now sold!

I have several stickers that were printed in preparation for the demolition of the Lexington Hotel in Chicago, as sort of an authentication item to accompany pieces of the hotel that were gathered by Capone enthusiasts. These are aluminum foil embossed stickers as pictured below, and measure 2.5” x 3.5”. These are $5 each, and can be mailed in a regular envelope for 46 cents.

In 1979, "Soldier of Fortune" magazine published a very detailed, 7-page article by Chuck Taylor on the Thompson. Helmer provided much of the information for the article. At the end of the SOF article on the Thompson, a reader could send off for a poster-sized copy of the early Auto-Ordnance advertisement featuring a Cowboy fighting off bandits on a ranch with a TSMG. Helmer was sent many of the posters for his own use, and I believe they are the only remaining stock of the ones printed for the SOF feature. I have many of these available for $10 each, plus $1.50 for a shipping tube, plus appropriate first class shipping. Shipping for one is usually about $2.75. If you want several of these, I can fit them in one tube. Here is a copy of the ad for the posters that appeared in SOF in 1979.

Here is a picture of one of the posters. They measure 11" x 14", and are printed on cardstock.

I have 2 different Thompson prints for sale, produced from originals that I own. These prints would each look great in your gun room, or as reference pieces.

Here they are:

Print #1: Model 1919 Thompson

From what I have been told, Auto-Ordnance draftsmen during WWII were asked to draw a picture of a Model of 1919 Thompson as part of a final assignment before being given regular work. I have one of these originals that was hand colorized with brown, grey, black, and yellow ink. It documents Model 1919 Thompson serial number "No." That particular weapon, which is featured In Tracie Hill's book, has a 1921 style actuator and a front sight, unlike other 1919's.

I had a number of color copies printed on card stock. They are slightly enlarged, and printed on 11" x17" paper with a small white border edge around the image. They came out very nice!

Here is a picture of the 11" x 17" print I am offering for sale. (Please excuse the flash reflection.) The prints look really great, and the printing reduced some of the wrinkles that are obvious when viewing the original, since it was pressed on glass for the copies to be made.

Print #2: Tommy Guns At The Front

I decided to make prints of this poster because I am aware of only 3 originals that exist today. I purchased 2 of them, and sold one to a prominent collector. I kept the one with a hand written notation on the bottom, and that is the one I used to produce the prints for sale. The 2 originals I purchased were found on the site of former print shop that did some work for Auto-Ordnance during World War II. This appears to have been an internal Auto-Ordnance motivational poster, and it features a censored letter from a soldier overseas during the war who was raving about his Thompson. Take a look at the story on the print, and you'll get the idea. The handwriting on the bottom of the print depicts a sad epitaph..."D.V. thinks this boy was killed back in the States in an air crash. I also think he was Ed Slawson's boy. D.V."

These prints measure 12" x 18", and are printed on card stock paper. They have a large white border on the top and bottom, and a thin white border on the sides, as can be seen in the picture.

I want to make each of these prints available to interested collectors at reasonable prices.

Prices are as follows for the 1919 poster, or the Tommy Guns At The Front poster:

$10 each, plus $1.50 for a shipping tube, plus appropriate first class shipping (Usually around $2.75). If you want several of these, I can fit them in one tube. I can ship the Helmer AO Cowboy posters with them, also.

I accept PayPal, money orders, and personal checks. Ohio sale are subject to 6.75% Ohio sales tax. Just e-mail me at the address listed below if you are interested in any of the items, or have any questions.

Thanks!

Adding one more item...

This is an author signed copy of the Gun Room Press version of The Gun That Made The Twenties Roar, by William J. Helmer. I had Bill sign it a few years ago. The price is $60, plus $3.50 shipping via Media Mail. The dustcover on this one shows some wear and tear, and I have placed it in a Brodart library quality dustcover protector, so it will last for many years to come. Here's your chance to own a signed copy of the classic TSMG book that is getting hard to find.

David,

You wouldn't happen to have an extra Whistlers Mother with Tommygun print by chance?

Bruce L,

Unfortunately, I don't. I only have the one that is framed and hanging in my basement bathroom. Some of my kids' friends ask why we have a picture of a Grandma sitting in a rocking chair with a big gun...

The proceeds from these 2 items will go to Bill Helmer.

I have one copy of "The Complete Public Enemy Almanac," by William J. Helmer and and the late Rick Mattix, author signed by BOTH AUTHORS. This is a new book, and the last extra copy that Bill Helmer had in his library. This is an excellent resource, and very few of the books were signed by both authors. The price is $60, plus $4.50 Media Mail shipping.

SOLD

Here's another item that someone will want...It's a book from Helmer's personal collection, and has his unique library paste-in on the first page, and is signed by him. (See picture below) This is the 1974 edition of Gun Collector's Digest, and is 320 pages long. It has 2 articles on machine guns, the first of which is a 3-page article centering around the Thompson by the late James Bannan, titled, "Collect Machine Guns? Sure You Can, But..." Jim Bannan published "Notes on Auto-Ordnance" originally, and then an updated, 2nd edition with Tracie Hill in the late 1980's. This book is $25, plus $3.50 USPS Media Mail shipping. Ohio residents must add 6.75% sales tax.

Do you have the Nelson & lockhoven volume I submachineguns for sales ?

soe,

I don't have any copies of The World's Submachine Guns, Volume I, available at the moment. I sold my last one several months ago. I have a couple of original 1967 copies of The World's Assault Rifles, though. They are $75 each, plus shipping.

Soe,

If you want a copy, I have an extra that I would sell. I purchased from David a while back. It has had water damage and many of the pages were stuck on the edges. I have since separated them. It's very readable only the pages have some warping and light tears. No mold damage or anything of the sort. If you are interested, shoot me a PM and I can figure out what shipping would be and send you somme photos of the condition. I'll sell the book for what I paid for it since I have upgraded this version with another that I lucked into at a good price.

- Ron
