Reising Magazine Data Collection - Please Contribute Your Data

All,

I'd like to learn more about the relative number of "NE" marked Reising magazines. These were apparently manufactured by a cooperative association of New England Small Arms companies, and are less common than Reising magazines without the "NE" markings. My intention is to document the various markings, as well as how many exist as a percentage in a sample Reising magazine population. This data could potentially be used in a future writing project.

If you look at the front of Reising 12 and 20-round magazines, most will only have the H&R address and Reising Submachine Gun markings located in the middle of the magazine. However, some have markings such as "NE-1," or "NE-9" at the bottom of the magazine front. This is what I'm interested in documenting further.

The marking appears on both 12 and 20 round magazines, as shown in the pictures below. It is a bit difficult to see, but the middle two magazines have the "NE" markings, with the middle left 20-round magazine being marked "NE-1," and the middle right 12-round magazine being marked "NE-9." I have 7 Reising magazines of the 12 and 20-round variety in my collection, so two were marked in this fashion.

Here's what I would like to document: (Numbers and markings are example data from my collection)

Number of 20 round magazines owned or examined: 5

Number of 20 round magzines with "NE" markings: 1

Exact "NE" marking: "NE-1"

Number of 12 round magazines owned or examined: 2

Number of 12 round magzines with "NE" markings: 1

Exact "NE" marking: "NE-9"

I will make this data available to anyone who is interested. If you would like to participate, please either post your data in this thread, or you can e-mail it to me at my address listed below.

Thanks!

Very similar results as you David. I had one more 20 round magazine. I had the same markings on my 20 and 12 round magazines.

texasvwnut,

The last statement in your post confused me a bit, when compared to the data you listed above it. Did the 12 and 20 round magazines have exactly the same "NE" marking, or were they different? Were they "NE-1" (20 round) and "NE-9" (12 round)?

Thanks for the data!

Yes.

I was just saying that I had one more magazine than you (a 20 round) and I had one "NE-1" (on a 20 round magazine) and a "NE-9" (on a 12 round magazine).

All,

I appreciate everyone's input with this thread so far. I just wanted to mention that if you don't have any "NE" marked Reising magazines, for instance if you have 3 Reising 20 round mags, and they are all blank, you can still participate with your data. This will help to keep the statistical analysis of the total magazine population accurate.

Thanks!

ODS9091,

Looks like you win the prize so far!! Nice Reising magazine collection.

I'm seeing some interesting trends, with 48 magazines in the total sample to date. Looks like NE-1 made only 20 round magazines (so far), and 12 round magazines were made by 5 different manufacturers that have been documented. (so far)

The data percentages are currently as follows:

28% of 20 round magazines are marked "NE-1," and 72% are unmarked.

68% of 12 round magazines are marked "NE" and a number, with 32% being blank.

I'd like to get the sample size to at least 200 magazines.

Thanks!

David, I've owned 6 Reising mags at one time but own three currently.

I sold three brushed dull blue original 20 round magazines that were not NE- marked. These magazine did have the circle reinforcement toward the feed lips on the rear of the magazine. All of my magazines are Harrington & Richardson marked magazines bought before any reproduction magazines were manufactured.

Of the three magazine I currently own two are NE-number marked.

Bright Polish Blue 20 round magazine NE-1, no witness holes, has circle re-enforcement near feed lips.

Parkerized 12 round magazine marked NE-7, no witness holes, folded over double thickness feed lips.

Bright Polish Blue 20 round magazine , not marked, has witness holes, no circle re-enforcement near feed lips.

Unmarked 20 round bright blue

NE-1 marked 20 round bright blue

NE-7 12 round parkerized

The questions just in the three I own, some have witness holes, some have double thickness feed lips, some have the circle re-enforcement on the rear near the feed lips, some were dull polish blue finish, some are bright polish blue finish.

Any idea on the order of the magazine production as far as features?
I know the 12 round magazines came out after the 20 round magazines.

All,

Well, I just had a submission that takes the sample size up to 100 magazines. I would like to get it to 200, so we're halfway there. Here is what the data says:

20 Round: 68 Sampled, 46 Unmarked, 21 Marked "NE-1", 1 marked "NE-2" (32% with NE markings)

12 Round: 32 Sampled, 9 Unmarked, 1 Marked "NE-4", 7 Marked "NE-5", 5 Marked "NE-7", 1 Marked "NE-8", 9 Marked "NE-9" (72% with NE Markings)

Overall, 45% of both types of magazines have NE markings.

Hi everyone. New to the boards , and only my second post here.

Have 6 12-rd mags. All with 3 holes in front , round disk in rear.

2 parked , std lips , no NE

1 parked , std lips , NE-2

2 parked , folded lips , NE-7

1 blued , folded lips , NE-7

Have 17 20-rd mags. All blued , 2 holes in front , regular lips , all but 1st one has round disk in rear.

1 no disk , 5 holes in side , no NE

12 with 5 holes in side , no NE

1 no holes in side , no NE

2 no holes in side , NE-1

1 no holes in side , NE-2

Does anyone here know the purpose of the upper front hole in all the mags? Seems unneeded to me.

HTH , Chris

Chris,

Thank you for joining the board. I hope you will find plenty of good information here, and it looks like you will be a welcomed contributor of content. From the number of magazines you have, I'm wondering if you have any other accessories that may not be covered in the FAQ section. If you get a chance, take a look at the Reising FAQ pinned post at the top of the board, and let me know if you have any additional content that could be considered for posting there. My goal is to continuously improve the fixed content of the site to make it the best resource (which I already think it is) for the Reising SMG. (As well as the Thompson)

We are now up to 133 Reising magazines in the data sample, and I'm still looking to reach the goal of 200. After that, I will include the data in a future article I have planned for Small Arms Review magazine that will cover Reising accessories.

So far, here are the summary NE magazine data results:

20 Rd. Reising Magazines: 92 sampled, 27 marked "NE-*" (29%)

12 Rd. Reising Magazines: 41 sampled, 29 marked "NE-*" (71%)

Overall: 133 sampled, 56 marked "NE-*" (42%)

Thanks!

Hey Dalbert,

I've got a Mdl 50 that was shipped from the factory, according to H&R on Dec. 8, 1941. Must have been a hell of a Monday. Anyway, I've got 3 20-rd mags for it. One of them is marked NE 1. I have no idea where the mags were before that, but that's the way I got it. Hope this little bit of info helps in some small way. I really like the Mdl 50, even though I have a TSMG. I can understand why the GI's and Marines "junked" them for something more reliable. I had problems with mine at first that a good gunsmith took care of but would not want to stake my life on it in some muddy stinkhole in the Pacific...or anywhere. Runs like a clock now. Great for civialian use, but really guys, a 12rd mag for a SMG? What were they thinking. Hell, it'd take the whole thing to knock down some of the Japanese marines at Guadalcanal. I like the light weight, but there's always a price to pay.

Regards,

Bounty1

Dalbert,

You might get this twice as I get used to this forum. Don't use it that much.

I have a Mdl 50 that I like very much. Had some problems in the beginning that a competent gunsmith fixed, but hey, 12-rd mags? What were they thinking? Just enough rounds to put down a Jap marine at Guadalcanal. Anyway, I have 3 mags, came with the gun. One is marked NE 1, the others, nothing. The gun left the factory on Dec. 8, 1941, according to H&R. Wonder what the topic of conversation was about that day. I like it a lot, but I wouldn't stake my life on it either, as so many Marines can attest to. Just not made for some slimy, muddy, battlefield. Other than that, just clicks them off, no problema.

Bounty1,

That's the coolest ship date I can think of for a Reising, or any other gun. Thanks for the info. We now have data on a sample of 140 magazines. Sixty more to go, and I'll reach the sample size goal of 200.
