wwiifirearms
I talked to them last week and they said they want someone with passion that travels the country tracking down guns. I am pretty hardcore, but I still only track down a few deals a month. So the first issue I saw was how are they going to ever get enough deals to make a show. I am sure after it airs deals would come like crazy, but the first season might be tricky. The second issue is that most people I buy from aren't going to want me to show up with a camera crew. No way you are getting a camera crew into any of the big collector shows. They were just starting the development process, and really didn't have many details. I am supposed to talk to them again this week, if I learn more I'll share. -wwiifirearms
Mike Hammer
I think the whole idea is stupid, and I believe the producers of this show may have an agenda, to show gun collecting in a bad light. I hope the idea does not come to fruition. Let the mindless American dunderheads be content with their "American Idol"...what a buch of S**T! Might as well bring back "The Gong Show" Mike Hammer

Might as well bring back "The Gong Show" Mike Hammer I think American Idol makes The Gong show look like Masterpiece Theatre. But, to be fair, I only watch it until I can get the remote back from the dog. Double LOL To stay on the thread; I would worry about this program receiving the same kind of manufactured drama seen on the other variations of this theme. The Storage Wars/Choppers/etc., are entertaining to various degrees, but do not affect the public perception of gun owners. The new show just aired last night about a class III gunsmith had a silenced shotgun -shades of "No Country for Old Men", and next week, -a flame thrower restoration. Although I personally find these very interesting, the overall image of "No room for more tattoos" and "who can we set on fire" is difficult to consider as a boon to the public perception of law abiding exotic weapons owners. But, to be fair again, no one has ever claimed the general public is particularly perceptive. Edited January 27, 2011 by mnshooter
Shattered
I would guess the History Channel is in a snit because of Discovery Channels "Sons of Guns" and those yahoos up in Maine making minitanks and robotic vehicles and trying to get a military contract... Howe & Howe Tech or something like that.

wwiifirearms
The people doing this show are the same people that did Top Shot, I think they treated competitive shooters fairly and I would expect they will treat the gun collecting topic fairly as well. Remember that most people know nothing about gun collectors, and assume we are all nut jobs. In reality I have found the vast majority of serious gun collectors to be extremely good people. We need the public to see images of gun collectors that are ethical, law abiding, good natured, family friendly people that we know most are. Too many of us have become afraid to tell our neighbors who we are. People fear what they don't understand, so it is no wonder we have so few young collectors and so many willing to trade our rights for a false sense of security. If you really want to help the hobby, earn the respect of others, and then tell them who you are. -wwiifirearms

darrylta
I guess the producers of this show expect the prospective host to haggle and buy at least 3 or 4 guns a week to fill a half hour show. To do that you'd have to be Mr. Moneybags. Now, if they are going to fund the purchases.....they may get some takers. :-) Darryl

Which show is this? Top Shots? What cable channel is it on? Thanks. Son of Guns or Sons of Guns, something like that. Sons Of guns Thursdays, 8-9pm /central time on the Discovery Channel. It's two half hour segments. The later segment for next week is listed as "Browning Machine Gun". The premiere shows are repeating Sunday Jan 30 from 12:00 (noon) to 1:00pm Central time. So far my favorite wrong impression is that it takes "about an hour of paperwork" for the owner to ostensibly take possession of his newly completed shotgun silencer. I'm probably most upset because I want it to be that way! (A friend who grew up in Bastogne, Belgium said buying a suppressor was "just like buying a toothbrush"; the guns were closely licensed, but the suppressors were not). Sarge
Is this show supposed to be about FAs and nothing else? I travel a 600 mi radius to gun shows and very rarely see any type of FA unless there happens to be a dealer set up. Thre is no way you're going to do a lot of "wheeling & dealing" with them. I've got a large collection and don't mind telling people what I think about things, but almost never buy any FA at a gun show. I buy lots of other stuff at gun shows though. Maby I should get hold of them and see just what they have in mind. Sarge

wonderful_one
It will probably be some antique colt collector or Luger guy. High dollar drama at live auction, tantrum fits when item doesn't meet reserve, etc. Pawn stars meets Pickers kinda thing. "gotta go to Texas for a Walker". Que Texas Rangers/Colt History from file. I might just give it a shot tho. Young gunsmith collector of czech firearms with a cute redhead wife that likes modern automatics & EBRs. Know a few local cops & comp shooters (extras). Got the WH '28 for FA Thompson porn. Play electric guitar. Have one tattoo (required?). Live in Las Vegas. Would so kill prices if I did it tho, even the rarest Czech guns can be found at bargains for a collector, part of the appeal. Do a show and suddenly that $100 parts gun is a "rare, as seen on history channel" only $xxxx. But always liked the idea of a "This old Gun" kinda show. More about gunsmithing & restoration than money.
