Arthur Fliegenheimer
This auction was back in September, 2017. The estimated value was $37,000. "The Colt Thompson Submachine Gun was purchased by Tuscarawas County Sheriff Abe Laird in 1934. Sheriff’s Office staff is unsure what the machine gun was originally used for." https://www.timesreporter.com/news/20170808/sheriff-to-auction-off-1921-thompson-submachine-gun-valued-at-37000 https://www.apnews.com/a4fe6b66f9d6482ebb5d32f36fbbb7e8

Atllaw
It came with the manual, 4 mags and a drum. That explains it.
First Sergeant
Two wealthy local benefactors bidding against each other is what happened.
TD.
One out of town bidder I know took the bid to 60K only because he knew the Sheriff's Department was going to be the recipient of the purchase price. He told me later the bidding did not even pause at 60K. And he was done. Let one of the local boys have it!

83Baron
Yeah I bid on the auction and spoke with the Sherriff who maintained it. It went to a local guy who wanted the gun and the history to remain with the town no matter the price.
Arthur Fliegenheimer
Yeah this one has been discussed and laughed at before....deep pockets and no brainsYou ain't kidding on all counts.Even though the seller didn't claim any Depression Era gangster connection, the final hammer price apparently reflected the desire of two (3,4?) local bidders to keep the TSMG with Tuscarawas, as 83Baron observed. They should change the name of the town to Tuscara-is the town for jaw-dropping Colt TSMG prices. http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21054&hl=tuscarawas

Grasshopper
Hi, FWIW, a friend of a friend purchased the Thompson. IIRC, there were two reasons he paid that much for it and the first reason driving his bidding. 1.) He grew up right there where the Thompson came from. He wanted it to say local. The second (not sure on this one) is that he considered it a donation to the local law enforcement. How can you go wrong? It is like the St. Louis PD guns. I've got a friend that really wanted one with history as he grew up in St. Louis. In the end he got one with some history as a bonus. (Ok. This one didn't sell for 90k!). Enjoy, Grasshopper
