Mike Hammer
Looking for some knowledge help here on a MG transfer that I want to do the easiest way The gun is a Thompson SMG, (C&R) owned by an private individual in Fla. who has no FFL. The gun is in his name on a form 4.I am in Louisiana and I have a C&R license. The question is what would be the least expensive way to transfer this AND what would be the quickest way to make the transfer?Since the gun is on a Form 4, can he transfer this directly to me in one transfer as I am a FFL holder? Or because he is out of state must he transfer it to a dealer in his state first and then the dealer sending it to me on a second transfer? I don't do many transactions anymore and I am not certain what the acceptable method would be. Really appreciate those more knowledgeable to chime in here. Thanks! huggytree
Use your c&r. 1 transfer to you. He can ship the gun fed ex next day direct to you after approval . You do not need to transfer it to a dealer. Edited February 15, 2021 by huggytree
G-Man1006
If the gun is a C&R gun and you have a valid C&R license the gun can be shipped directly to you after ATF approves the transfer paperwork.
Mike Hammer
That is great to hear, I thought I might be able to do that but wanted to be certain before getting the paperwork started. Thanks for your help guys!
Sandman1957
I would recommend USPS registered mail. Congrats by the way!! You can always take a road trip and pick it up in person. Not sure what the transfer times are at the moment. betting 7 months or longer. 83Baron
Mike, you may get it sooner as I had a Ppsh recently go through from September 2020 to January 2021, almost 4 months to the day. Ive heard both shorter and longer times as of recent. It went to my C&R as well. Edited February 15, 2021 by 83Baron
maxfaxdude
4 months or less currently on most transfers. But with Biden in power, we'll see just how long this lasts.
Tiz
USPS Registered Mail is the safest way to go save picking it up yourself. That is only way PK recommends shipping Thompsons.
ppgcowboy
The only downfall is that some people are shady and even though you are buying it, they have possession and may want to take it for a ride. Most are honorable though. If it is a colt, I would have all the parts sent. This includes the internals, the wood and the trigger housing. Congrats on your purchase. inertord
Also hopefully ATF doesnt want to debate the individual firearms C&R Status prior to approval.

Mike As others have noted, a direct transfer to you as a C&R holder is the least expensive way to transfer to you (one transfer tax). As a C&R holder, I've bought several C&R SMGs from individuals out-of-state. On the other hand, I sometimes like to get the gun close to me quickly, and the seller could transfer the gun directly to a SOT dealer near you in your state (which would cost a $200 tax stamp and is typically a quicker transfer) and the SOT could then transfer it directly to you (another $200 tax stamp). The Lone Ranger is the Board expert on transfers, although I don't recall seeing any recent posts from him but may have missed them.
b_san
You guys and your Registered Mail fetish. I always ship FedEx 2 day and maintain business insurance to cover inventory in hand and coming and going. Shipper insurance isn't worth the paper it's printed out on. Sandman1957
Yes that's great input, as long as you have a business. Some of us are simply collectors.
b_san
Yes that's great input, as long as you have a business. Some of us are simply collectors. So get collection insurance, most cover shipping of your insured collection as well. Seriously, I've dealt with insurance claims from all of the big 3 and even if you ever end up collecting after jumping through all the hoops, you likely won't get full value and it will take forever to get the check. You're much better off with private insurance than relying on shipper's insurance no matter how you ship.
ppgcowboy
Shippers insurance is garbage. They rarely if ever pay. UPS is the worst.

So the direct transfer or you'll add a few months and pay a FFL for a transfer.. Cut out the middle man.
Sandman1957
Thanks b_san. Going back and looking at the USPS notes on firearms, the insurance only covers total loss as well, plus the fact they will not pay if you shipped a machinegun, since its not one of their stated categories. FEDEX it is, and I am recommending we update pinned references in my other email. As with most with don't have to like it, just comply with it. av8tr
I have Collector's Insurance. The Limit of Insurance for a Fedex shipment is $25,000. Interestingly, the Limit of Insurance for a UPS shipment is $10,000. $25,000 won't cover the value of many NFA shipments these days, but it's better than nothing or headaches. Maybe it is possible to get a higher shipping Limit of Insurance. And to be fair, I have never filed a claim with Collector's either.

Here's what our FAQ page states about FedEx shipping: "FedEx: Updated 10 Dec 12 FedEx no longer has the restriction on firearms insurance as previously reported, the current level is $50,000. Questions about shipping via FedEx can be answered here under firearms - http://www.fedex.com...ound/index.html" RT updated the level of FedEx insurance to $50,000, which is what it was at the time of the above post about shipping (post from several years ago). If it's $25,000 now it was lowered from $50,000, so you'll want to double check the level of insurance in the regulations. Sandman may have checked it and if so maybe can advise. People were reporting that insurance from the shipper was proving worthless.

Had to move to a warmer locale. I would do direct to the collector FFL. Sometimes you run into people that insist a dealer needs to be in the middle but it's rubbish. huggytree
I did collect w collectors insurance. It was usps w no signature. All they would pay is $200! Item was $900. If I had a signature they would have covered it. They paid $200 very quickly. Now I do a signature on everything

I learned the hard way like you did.. but I had to eat the cost.. though it was due to a chargeback by the customer and I lost my case only due to not having a signature!
