i was talking with a old time dealer the other day{no!! i was not talking to myself in the mirror}>wink!

and he mentioned the mp-38 rarity and the thompson's...and said the thompson is the one...

i told him WRONG!! the mp-38 is the much rarer gun.

due to the amount of numbers produced,and what survived the war,and what had returned to the u.s.a.legally.

the original colts numbered 15,000 the military in the million's...

the mp-40 just around one million plus..

however the original mp-38 just around>42,000...

and i mentioned i am sure all 42,000 did not end up in the u.s.a.after the war...

and if only 20% or so ended up in this country.that would be less then 8,400 mp-38's...{my guess around 1,000 or so}

but of course the thompson is the one to have,with the mp-38 then the mp-40 a close second and third....

then he mentioned selling a mp-40 for $7,000.00.i was lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it.to see this gun at a local t.c.c.show in sept.

a original 660 code early first variant mp-40,smooth mag. housing,first style cocking handle {hook type} all matched number's,in about 95% cond.

so do all thompson owners have the axis mp-40 in the collection,or even a replica??

Hey Ron,..I got mine...mp40 that is..along with a 21, Savage 28 and a PK/WH 28...now for rarity,try a Schnellfuhrer...brutal on the thumb,but definitely something you don`t see everyday...

i had a dealer send me some pics of his pre-86 he is selling for $4,500.00 with replica shoulder stock and 10 and 20 shot mag,he says original finish,only holster wear.

the holster is wood???

it is bad to have a disease of only having minty,or new in box stuff.

i realize alot of dealers and collector's that are out there are used to worn,patina,shot,used worn stuff!!

i have not owned much of it..........so its getting harder and harder to buy.when i see the stuff that is being sold today..{FOR BIG BUCK'S}

in all honesty i would rather have a restored sample of something.then some beat to hell, rusted, pitted,mismatched,shot out, relic!!

the poorest piece i own is a mismatched,exc.cond.ayf 43 mp-40..{and i am not selling it}

i guess the greed factor will keep rising on all this stuff.till they stop buying...thats about the time the demand for oil will stop.wink!!

Ron, I got a tube MP40 in the mix now and a WH M1 and a Military Reising also a DLO Sterling coming down the pipe. This should round out my collection for a while.. Being a late starting collector with deep but not "SO" deep pockets puts ya in a position where shopping is mandatory. I like my "shooters" don't want a "Safe Queen" I'd be hesitant to shoot. I'll probably hav PK refurbish both Thompson's to Mil-spec when I get a chance but until then a few scratches and stuff ain't bothering me.. .. I know I'm rambling but I'm still on a "high" from having fired my first LEGAL MG in my life..

I`ve seen that one posted for sale,Ron,...that would be kinda neat to have and shoot...the mags are hard to find for me,anyway...sterlings,stens,reisings,uzis,macs,madsens,bars,beltfeds,...hope I live long enough to wear `em out...well just a little bit,...

i sold all my safe queen's this past week..even to a member here.and all my ratholed goodies....

now just a few shooter's.mp-40, m-16,a ole .45colt,

its called beating the vultures to the safe game!!wink!!

we all enjoy what we do.we just have to keep on enjoyin it.....hope those mags work...rich on the board is getting the last batch i had...

Yes, Ron, I also have an MP-40. It's a really nice all-matching Erma from 1943. It impressed Frank, so it's a keeper for sure. Not a Safe Queen, but somewhat pampered like the rest of the items in my safe.

It's that WWII thing banging around in my head....

Gotta have both the 28A1 and MP-40!

I have an all-matching Steyr made MP40, bnz41 coded. If I'm hauling out one of the Thompsons for someone who has never fired a submachine gun, I'll take along the MP40 as well so that they can do an informal comparison. This seems to be pretty popular and much appreciated!

It is super nice and it all matches to boot. I shoot with a shooter barrel, bolt, and recoil tube, don't want to take any chances. I have an awesome MP44 too if you would like to see a pic, let me know.

The condition of that 44, looks new!
Tell me, From a design standpoint, the swept back grip looks fantastic. But how is it to shoot?
Man, those guys had some mean looking things cooking up in the 40's.

It fits your hand like a glove and with the weight (12lbs empty), and the relatively slow rate of fire, it is very easy to control. It's a blast (no pun intended) to shoot! I got it from a WWII major about 12 years ago. He brought it back from Germany at wars end. Probably picked out the best one he could find. I also bought about 2000 round of 7.92 Kurz at the same time, about half late war German and the rest was 60's eastern block stuff.

Quick question for you MG RKI type dudes. Whats up with the funky angle of the pistol grip on that weapon and also on the FG 42? Just wondering...

Believe it or not, the angle of the grip is virtually identical to that of the thompson.
